AT ETOWAH COUNTY DETENTION CENTER‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️‼️

What Are Conditions Like at Etowah County Detention Center‼️‼️‼️‼️

1. Religious services: Currently no services or holidays recognized, and no religious books or reading materials
2. Laundry: Clothes are not properly cleaned or sanitized, inadequate undergarments
3. Law Library: Not enough computers, no legal books, outdated legal resources, no printer access
4. Food Services and Dietary Restrictions: Food insufficient in nutrition, quality, and temperature. Rotten food served, and health-relat-
ed dietary restrictions not observed
5. Barbershop and Barber Equipment: No seating, inadequate and unsanitary equipment
6. Phone system and video visitation: Calls and video are 41 cents per minute (other facilities' rates are 9 cents per minute), not granted
phone access unless $5 is in account
7. Television: Only 2 TVs, one without cable, for 128 detainees. No seating, no access to television in Spanish
8. Showers and bathrooms: Showers have no stalls or dividers, only 3 showers for all 128, ice cold temperature, not properly cleaned and
no access to adequate cleaning supplies
9. Books, shoes, and other items: Detainees may not have family send books or shoes, but jail does not provide books or shoes, there is no
library
10. Attorney Phone calls and Video Visit: No VTC with attorneys, no private phone lines to communicate with counsel, attorney/client
calls are recorded
11. Professional conduct and treatment: Staff treat detainees like prisoners, behave inappropriately, exhibit hostility. Wake them for
searches in the middle of the night, touch or grab their ge***al areas, segregate those who protest, grievances not reported, officers threaten
with tasers, paintball guns, and gas canisters over minor matters
12. Care Pack: No hygiene items given upon arrival
13. Medical treatment: Inadequate medical supplies, lack of consistent access to prescription medicines, eye doctor not sufficiently acces-
sible, lack of access to medical files when detainees are injured while in detention- either hurt by staff or in accident. Serious conditions not
treated properly, no access to recovery time in infirmary, no access to outside physicians or dental care by ICE decree.
14. Officers unprofessional, lack of regard for privacy, disregard grievances, lack of access to ICE supervisors
15. Structural problems: Dark and depressing living facility, lights don't work, bare concrete walls, not enough seating, no access to sun-
light or outdoor time
16. Microwave and Hot Pots: Insufficient appliances, disputes often break out
17. Recreational Items: No sports equipment, used to have tablets but got taken away, no reading material, less access to activities than
inmates serving time for criminal charges
What are Protestors Demanding?
1. Lockdown: No lockdowns other than head count and shift change
2. Clothes: Underclothes, more than two changes of clothes, and shoes
3. Phones: Lower call prices, make communication accessible
4. Food & Diet
5. Microwaves: More appliances available, currently only 2 for nearly 140 people
6. Kiosk Computers: Access to legal research
7. Showers: Stalls or curtains for privacy
8. Laundry facilities
9. Commissary: Items are being sold that are out of stock, publish an out of stock list
10. Tablets: Recreation would help relieve tension and stress

Final update on Day 2
The rock show starts at 8:00.
The Rock show ends at 10. Parking will be at the county courthouse. From 10:00 to 10:30 we asked that everyone under the age of 18 leave by 10:30 will we be starting the adult dance party. The adult dance party will be from 10:30 to 1:00. Anyone willing to help clean up after will be invited to the after party which will be till 2:00 a.m.

The show will be loud. So you may need to bring ear plugs.
And the surprise band is Thinksanity.

Story time is going well.

Final update on Day 1 of pride weekend.
We will convene at the rain center (920 forrest Ave) at 1:30 to go over protocol and safety. After that we will start the march down the corner of 9th and Forest.

We will have a break and will be back with the speak up speak out listening session. And after that we will have our story time for our kids.
Organizers should be there by 12:30 for any of the early birds.

Update 2
We seriously take the health and safety of our community serious.
It has come to the attention of RAIN organizers there is a safer path for the march.
So as of now there has been a change on march location for Friday . And we will also be having a 15 discussion on protocol and safety before hand.
we will meet up in the county courthouse parking lot to our building at 914 forrest Avenue starting a 1:30 pm Central.
We will take 15 minutes to go over safety procedures. Will start the march on the corner of south 9th and Forest. From there it will be 3 right turns till we are back in front of the RAIN Community Center on 920 Forrest Ave.

Race against Injustice now is getting together a group of lgbtq members of our community and allies to plan out Gadsden's 2nd Annual Pride event. Kolbey Freeman (He/Him) I am 36 years old, And as for me and my household, we serve The Lord. I am a husband, father, minister, activist, and organizer. I serve as Secretary Treasure on the board of Race Against Injustice Now. I am also a board member of the Walk To Emmaus Christian Ministry. I have been involed with charity and advocacy work for nearly two decades. I attended Bethel Methodist University in Tennessee and now attend The Estonian Baptist Bible College in Birmingham, I'm currently seeking a degree in Theology. I believe in the separation of Church and State, I believe that Black Lives Matter, I believe in LGBTQ rights. I am thankful to be a part of the R.A.I.N organization and I am proud of the work that we do!

He is one of the co-founders of Race Against Injustice Now (RAIN), a youth-led organization that supports other youth, BIPOC, LGBTQ, and working-class people in their home community.

I was born in Grand Rapids, MI and my family moved to Gadsden AL in 2007.
I graduated from Southside High School in 2016 and
graduated from Jacksonville State in 2020 with a major in Political Science and minor in Criminal justice, with focus on Pre-Law.
I am waiting for my admission
decision from Cumberland as I aspire to go to law school and become an attorney. I currently work at a civil defense firm in Birmingham. My dad built a barn wedding and event venue for me and my husband to get married in, and now we host other wedding and events for people of our community! He purchased some land off Green Valley Rd. where the old race track used to be. In my free time I help out with weddings, go to concerts and festivals, paint, read, and hang out with friends and family!
