We help a person, whose brain can no longer send the correct signals, to produce basic sentences and answer simple questions so he can participate in social activities with others...
We teach memory strategies to someone with dementia so she can remember the names of her grandchildren...
We help a child on the autism spectrum with their social skills, in the hopes that the bullying will stop and they will make one friend before the end of the school year...
We rehab someone's swallowing muscles so they can have a sip of McAlister's ice tea, because it is their absolute favorite...
We give hope to the parents who have finally accepted that their child is delayed, after the doctor repeatedly tells them he is just a late talker...
We teach someone with new cochlear implants how to communicate without sign language after a lifetime of deafness being all they know...
We ease a stuttering child's anxiety when they are preparing to stand up in front of their class to give a book report...
We show someone how to apply a passy-muir valve to their tracheostomy so they can use their voice to tell their family "I love you” ...
We have the difficult conversation with a family to tell them that grandma's cognitive impairments make her unsafe to go back to her home alone...
We help a child pronounce certain sounds correctly, after years of others reinforcing the wrong way, when they reach an age where their impairment is no longer considered cute...
We help a young, intelligent woman who has had a massive stroke learn to use a speech-generating device so that she can return to her vibrant and capable self...
We place voice prostheses to allow a Laryngeal Cancer survivor to tell his family he loves them after cancer so cruelly took his voice from him....and we think about these people when we're falling asleep at night and we pray for them and we spend time off the clock and our own money on things that we think may help them even the slightest... and we constantly put up with being misunderstood and overlooked.

So if you know a Speech Pathologist, tell them thank you and give them a hug, because I promise you, after spending their days pouring their hearts into others, they need someone to replenish theirs.

It with deep sadness that I share we lost one of our dedicated team members of Professional Speech. Jen worked for us as a new grad and moved to Canton with her husband after she married. She was one of the most compassionate and sweet therapists, who was always willing to work hard and be present for all of her clients! She was helpful in developing our speech camp summer groups. She continued her work in Canton and had 2 amazing children whom she adored and are a great reflection of her.
May she rest in eternal peace! God bless her and her family!

The Big Walnut Speech Staff for 2022-2023 school year….

Great Expressions Speech Camp just concluded our first summer camp session for 2022. The month of June was busy and we had lots of great language experiences and tons of fun! So happy to have hard working campers!!! Session 2 begins July 5 and we are excited to have more campers join us! We have some exciting activities planned forJuly! 3/21: Together we can empower people around the world to advocate for full inclusion in society for people with Down syndrome and for everyone.

☀️Our Summer program is 98% full. We only have a couple openings in our school aged groups (8-12) and our July Pre-k groups. We will start a wait list in the case an enrollee cancels their registration!
We are excited about the response and our plans for this summer are very exciting!👨‍👩‍👦‍👦

Today we had a send off company gathering for two of our favorite SLP’s. Tara Bergstedt had worked with us for 16 years and Deanna McCauley 8 years. They both spent most of their time with Big Walnut Schools and our summer program, Great Expressions Camp. We wish them much success in their new endeavors! They will be missed!

Our campers have been super busy over the last couple of weeks learning about camping, fire safety, occupations, transportation modes, socializing at a picnic and more! We’ve seen some “great expressions” of language shared and some wonderful growth! Another wonderful summer with fantastic campers!

Some of our superhero campers 🦸‍♀️🦸🏻‍♂️ brought their super powers to camp this week!

Great Expressions Speech Camp is underway for another summer! Our kids are great and having fun! We are grateful to have another summer to share with wonderful kiddos and families!❤️🥰☀️

We want to give big shout out to our Junior helpers!
Mia Mary Mason and Alexis Kelly Piper were great helping us with cleaning, picking up and entertaining our campers!

Mia will be a Junior at Big Walnut HS and DAAC Bioscience program and is the youngest of 4 children.
Alexis will be in 8th grade at Genoa Christian Academy. She is the middle of three children in her house and loves to show pigs and do farming!
