Bruxism (teeth grinding) can wear down the biting surfaces of teeth over time, making them more susceptible to decay. Schedule a six-month exam so your dentist can check for signs of bruxism and may recommend a night guard to prevent grinding while you sleep.
Happy Friday!
According to Dentaly.org, only 50 percent of Americans visit their dentist every six months as recommended. Meanwhile, 21 percent have not visited the dentist’s office in over three years. On that note, up to 80 percent of American adults have some degree of dental anxiety.
Happy First Day of Spring! 🌷
Happy St. Patrick's Day! ☘️
In 3500 BC, Babylonians and Egyptians used chewing sticks about the size of a pencil to clean their teeth. In the 700s, the first toothbrush with bristles was invented during China’s Tang Dynasty. In 1857, Dr. Hiram Nichols Wadsworth patented the toothbrush in the U.S.
Gum disease, also called gingivitis or periodontitis, is the leading cause of tooth loss in older people. Scheduling a six-month exam gives your dentist the opportunity to discover early signs of gum disease before it becomes untreatable.
It's Friday! Have a great weekend.
In 1885, American companies began mass-producing toothbrushes with boar bristles, bone, and wood or ivory handles. In 1938, the American company DuPont started manufacturing toothbrushes with nylon bristles. In 1954, Dr. Phillippe Guy Woog invented the first electric toothbrush in Switzerland.
Reduced saliva flow increases the risk of decay and gum problems. As many as 800 different drugs cause dry mouth as a side effect. So, always tell your dental professional about any medications you take since a change in prescriptions may help alleviate the problem.
2600 BC marked the death of the world’s first-known dentist. He was named Hesy-Ra, an Egyptian native whose tomb reads: “The greatest of those who deal with teeth, and of physicians.” His most notable title was Wer-ibeḥsenjw, meaning either "Great one of the ivory cutters" or "Great one of the dentists."
Some whitening chewing gums might tempt you, due to their convenience and whitening capabilities. But these chewing gums often have abrasive substances that are designed to scrape away stains as you chew. This means they can also scrape away your enamel, weakening your teeth’s defenses!
Ancient Romans have always been known for their ingenuity; the Colosseum is just one example! Another example was their savvy when it came to dental work; they’d utilize mixtures of bones, eggshells, oyster shells, and honey to clean their teeth!
Your toothbrush is one of your greatest allies when it comes to maintaining good oral health, so you should be sure that you’re replacing it often. You should get a new brush every 3 months.
Enjoy the Weekend!
The average American spends a total of 38.5 days out of their lifetime brushing their teeth. That’s just over a full month!
Happy Valentine's Day! ❤️
Using a straw when drinking coffee, sodas, and juices can greatly reduce the amount of time that the acids and sugars come into contact with your teeth.
Have a Nice Weekend!
Soda tastes great, but it’s not exactly great for your teeth. People who drink 3 or more cans per day have 62% more tooth decay, fillings, and tooth loss than people who don’t drink it.
Did you know that brushing your teeth too hard can be just as harmful as not brushing them at all? Overbrushing can wear down the enamel of your teeth, leading to painful sensitivity. If the bristles are being squashed against your teeth while you’re brushing, ease up!
Thank Goodness It's Friday!
Including the roots, the teeth of a Tyrannosaurus Rex could reach up to 12 inches in length and weigh up to a pound each. But they weren’t just for show; it’s estimated that the creature had the most powerful bite of any terrestrial animal that has ever lived!
Sports-related mouth injuries are not uncommon, especially in children! That said, wearing a mouthguard can go a long way toward preventing damaged or displaced teeth. Mouthguards redistribute the force of physical impact across all of your teeth, lessening the power of the blow.
"There is fear when frowning. There is love when smiling." —Maxime Lagacé
Did you know that women tend to smile more often than men? On average, a woman smiles 62 times per day; meanwhile, the average man only smiles eight times per day.
Flossing is actually just as important as brushing, but many people run into challenges when trying to get it done! If this happens, you might consider using dental floss picks; these handy tools are much easier to work than strands of traditional dental floss, especially for young children or older adults with limited mobility.
Have a Great Weekend!
