There’s a video circulating about Citizens Field that has some inaccuracies we’d like to clear up. Any major construction is years away, and there will be public workshops to gather feedback before any work begins. Those workshops are on top of the survey and public workshops we have already held.
• In Oct. 2023, a feasibility report for Eighth Avenue and Waldo Road gave some recommendations for the proposed project.
• An architectural and engineering study began last month, and it should end in mid-2025. That study will help determine which recommendations may work best.
• The city will receive conceptual plans and cost estimates for improvements. Those could include expanding the MLK Jr. Multipurpose Center. This is also where new fields, renovations to Citizens Field, improvements to Dwight H. Hunter Northeast Pool, and construction of a new Fire Station #3 could be considered.
• The City of Gainesville and Alachua County Public Schools (ACPS) extended their lease agreement through June 30, 2025, with up to two possible 12-month extensions, if needed. The field was re-sod by ACPS this summer to make the field safe and playable this season.
• The city’s Wild Spaces Public Places is working on some short term upgrades to the locker rooms and restrooms at Hunter Pool.
• There will be public workshops to gather feedback on the plans and the layout.
We are working on adding this project and others to our website soon, so stay tuned to see your tax dollars at work!

Labor Day message from Mayor Harvey Ward
Labor Day marks an important moment in United States history. Rising from the labor movement of the late 19th century, the holiday was established to recognize the vital contributions of workers in shaping the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our nation.
In Gainesville, our community thrives because of the dedication of neighbors across every sector. Public servants, healthcare professionals, construction workers, artists, teachers, entrepreneurs and countless others give our city its vibrant and unique character. That is the foundation of Gainesville’s success.
If you work here, you make our community a better place for all. Today we honor you, and we are deeply grateful.
Enjoy this well-deserved holiday.
Harvey

Morning, Gainesville! We continue to monitor Hurricane Debby. As of this morning, the Public Works Department has received 10 calls for downed trees within city limits and no reported flooding. Some traffic signals are out. When approaching an intersection with a flashing or dark signal light, be cautious and treat it as a four-way stop.
Staff from the Gainesville Police Department, Gainesville Fire Rescue, Public Works, RTS and other departments are working throughout the city to keep the community safe. First responder vehicles are fueled and chainsaws are at the ready as the storm moves through our area. RTS is running reduced service today with no campus routes and reduced frequency on all other routes. Fares are suspended throughout the day.
Remember- stay away from downed trees, which may be tangled in power lines. Make sure generators are placed in well-ventilated areas, not in the garage, and at least 20 feet from the house.
We encourage neighbors to stay home as the storm moves through, and continue to stay off flooded roads and monitor local meteorologists’ reports as well as updates that are available online and on social media from the National Weather Service-Jacksonville and the National Hurricane Center.
