We can't wait for this this ConnectUR Preconference workshop! Leveraging Career-Readiness Language in Your Research & Creative Inquiry Experiences

This highly engaging workshop will take place on Monday, June 24, 2024, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM ET in College Park, Maryland, and will be facilitated by Jeanne Mekolichick, Joe Wirgau, Leah Ellis, Abi Green, and Cora Burt.

Participants will learn to reframe how to present their undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry (URSCI) experiences in terms of transferable career readiness skills identified by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) as in demand by employers. The aim of these student-centered career readiness adjustments is to close the articulation gap between what students learn from their URSCI experiences and what recruiters, employers, legislators, and families seek from higher education. Participants will: (1) become familiar with the NACE career readiness competencies, (2) learn how to apply the NACE competencies to undergraduate research experiences (UREs), (3) see examples of how to apply the NACE competencies to UREs, and (4) begin an action plan for infusing NACE career readiness in your UREs.

We can't wait for this ConnectUR Preconference workshop ideal for graduate students, post-doc researchers, and early career faculty! Developing Your Research Program in the Natural Sciences With Undergraduate Students

This highly engaging workshop will take place on Monday, June 24, 2024, 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM ET in College Park, Maryland, and will be facilitated by Joyce Fernandes, Lance Barton, Doug Dluzen, Joe Reczek, and Michael Jackson.

Get to Know CUR New Elected Leadership - James LaPlant of Valdosta State University (2025-26 CUR President)

Q: Do you prefer the beach or the mountains and why?

A: I prefer the beach over the mountains because I would rather battle a shark than a bear, and I am not courageous enough to eat seafood in the mountains.

Q: What is your motivation as a leader in undergraduate research?

A: My motivation as a leader of undergraduate research is to expand opportunities, secure funding, and integrate experiences across the curriculum for our students and their talented faculty mentors.

Get to Know CUR New Elected Leadership - Karen Resendes of Westminster College (2024-25 CUR Treasurer)

Q: Do you prefer the beach or the mountains and why?

A: My ideal downtime actually includes a bit of both! Specifically, if I can get to the Big Island of Hawaii and spend my days on waterfall and volcano hikes, sitting at the beach with a book, or exploring black sand (or even green sand!) beaches, then I am in my happy place. My husband and I have made the trip several times and were lucky enough to take my two teenage daughters out to explore our favorite spots for the first time recently.

Q: What is your motivation as a leader in undergraduate research?

A: From day one, my motivation for my role as a mentor of undergraduate researchers was to make sure that my students had the same amazing impactful opportunities that I was fortunate enough to have when I was an undergraduate myself. This passion carries over to my leadership roles at my institution and with CUR. My aim is to always remember the students and mentors themselves and ensure that we are providing the support and structure needed to develop success in undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative investigations for all.
