Food For Thought
The Environmental Working Group (EWG) published a study in the Journal of Exposure Science & Environmental Epidemiology on Thursday that found a staggering 80% of Americans tested positive for a harmful pesticide called chlormequat. This “highly toxic agricultural chemical” is federally allowed to be used on oats and other grains imported to the US, according to the EWG. When applied to oat and grain crops, chlormequat alters a plant’s growth, preventing it from bending over and thus making it easier to harvest, per the EWG. They say that four out of five Americans are being exposed to chlormequat, which is found in popular oat-based foods, including Cheerios.
Just as troubling, they detected the chemical in 92% of oat-based foods purchased in May 2023. For reference, chlormequat was detected in 69% of study participants in 2017. The number edged higher, to 74%, between 2018 and 2022, and spiked to 90% in 2023. Since chlormequat typically leaves the body within 24 hours, such a high concentration of positive tests indicates that Americans are regularly being exposed to the pesticide.
This work highlights the need for more expansive monitoring of chlormequat in U.S. foods and in human specimens, as well as toxicological and epidemiological study on chlormequat, as this chemical is an emerging contaminant with documented evidence of low-dose adverse health effects in animal studies.
For anyone who has experienced plantar fasciitis, you know just how painful and annoying it can be. It can be very stubborn to treat using traditional means such as stretching, NSAIDs, cryotherapy, corticosteroid injections, and night splints. Fortunately, acupuncture is a great treatment to use against this ailment. It forces blood to the area giving oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissues that so sorely need it. Myofascial tension that can cause inflammation will also be decreased, helping pain levels to come down. If left untreated, plantar fasciitis can lead to pain in the knees, low back, and pelvis. If you are suffering from this condition, we can help!
Every now and then we have a patient come in that tells us that they were told to NEVER have their neck adjusted due to the risk of having a stroke. To be clear, there are risks to ANY treatment out there. But the risk of having a stroke from a spinal manipulation is 1-3 out of every 1 million people. Compare that to 1800 for every 1 million people from spinal surgery. The chances of having a stroke from medications prescribed to patients by their doctor can range from 1 in 1,000 to 1 in 10,000! These medications include popular ones such as statins, NSAIDs, and anti-depressants.
At our clinic we always want our patients to feel comfortable with their treatment and we offer different ways to treat the neck without using traditional adjustments. We also want our patients to be well informed of any risks so that they can make a confident decision for their own health needs.
Your gut biome has a significant impact on your overall health. There are numerous studies indicating the importance of a healthy gut-brain connection. Certain foods can have a negative impact on this ecosystem inside your body. When going grocery shopping, pay close attention to the food labels. Avoid foods/drinks that contain high fructose corn syrup along with drinks that have saccharin or sucralose listed. Juices can be thought of as healthy, but they can contain a high amount of sugar. Most cereals have high fructose corn syrup as their first or second ingredient.
Processed meats such as bacon, hot dogs, beef jerky, and lunch meats are associated with a higher risk of colon cancer. These meats may contain unhealthy bacteria that can create a higher likelihood of developing colon polyps that become cancerous.
So be more mindful of your shopping choices for you and your kids the next time you’re at the store. Reading the labels can help you avoid the marketing tactics used by some companies which make their product appear like a “healthy” option even though it’s not.
Older people love a good deal, especially when it comes to the “early bird specials”. Besides saving a little money on food, they are unknowingly doing something else important in how their body stores fat. A study put out by investigators from Brigham and Women’s Hospital found that when we eat significantly impacts our energy expenditure, appetite, and molecular pathways in adipose tissue.
This study showed that eating earlier versus later had a significant impact on levels of leptin and ghrelin, which are hormones that tell your brain and body that you’re full (leptin) or hungry (ghrelin). People who ate later had lower levels of leptin across a 24 hour period and decreased lipolysis, which promotes fat growth. They also burned calories at a much slower rate, so avoid the late night snacking and learn from your elders!
Stress is something that everyone experiences at some point throughout their life. Cortisol is our "stress hormone" which is released when we're stressed and helps us in the short term. But long term, or chronic stress, can lead to things such as hyperglycemia, inflammation, muscle aches, headaches, weakened immune system and higher blood pressure. You may also have a hard time sleeping since typically our cortisol levels are lower at night. Acupuncture is a great way to help release the body's natural "feel good" hormones while also reducing elevated cortisol levels.
Our jobs can wreak havoc on our bodies. Even someone who has a desk job and sits most of their day experiences strain in their back and neck muscles which can cause tension in their joints. If left untreated, this can lead to lingering issues that may prevent you from enjoying life. A study shows that nursing assistants suffer the most from work-related musculoskeletal disorders involving the back. Their job requires a lot of lifting and bending when handling patients or assisting during a procedure.
Be sure to get your “tune up” adjustment every so often to help maintain a healthier spine. Everyone can benefit from having their spine adjusted by a chiropractor that is trained to correct these musculoskeletal issues, no matter what age!

People today are consuming about 650 kilocalories more daily than they were in the 1970s, an amount equivalent to a fast-food meal consisting of a burger, fries, and soft drink. Poor diet and lack of activity may lead to “normal” but elevated blood glucose levels, even in people without Type 2 diabetes, contributing to neurodegenerative processes.
“High normal” blood sugar levels may progress to impaired fasting glucose and, eventually, Type 2 diabetes; impaired glucose metabolism is then associated with neurodegeneration that impairs cognitive function.
A recent study suggests that you may begin to lose neurons and neuron function early in life if you eat poorly, and such changes may be difficult, if not impossible, to counteract once the damage is done; the sooner you start focusing your diet on whole, unprocessed foods, the better.
Eating fast food, which is the epitome of highly processed "fake" foods, can have lasting ramifications on your brain health, so much so that researchers at Australian National University suggested you can cause "irreversible" damage by the time you reach middle age, just by eating a fast-food diet and not staying active.
If you are middle-aged and haven't been eating the best, don't panic, you can start making healthier changes starting today. However, the new study is eye-opening, once again hitting home the importance of healthy eating when it comes to keeping your mind strong as you age.
Many of us have hectic lives and we forget about the importance of taking care of ourselves. Carving out a little time to yourself to engage in some type of aerobic activity for about 20-30 minutes 2-4 times a week can have a tremendous positive impact. Accompany this with lifting weights and you’re doing even better! The key is to find something that you enjoy doing because if it feels like a chore, you’re less likely to participate.
An observational study of nearly 100,000 people over about ten years, published Sept. 27 in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, found that people who reported lifting weights once or twice a week—without doing any other exercise—had a 9% lower risk of dying from any cause except for cancer. People who paired 1-2 days of weekly weight-lifting with aerobic exercise fared even better; their risk of dying was 41% lower than those who did not exercise.
Red Light and Near-Infrared Therapy: An Overview
Red Light Therapy, also referred to as Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) or photobiomodulation - is the act of utilizing red light (and/or near-infrared light) for beneficial properties within the body.
Practical examples of this therapy may include the use of a laser that emits light in red light spectrum onto an injured body part, or red-light LED shown on the body. Red Light Therapy is an FDA approved treatment for acne, muscle and joint pain, compromised blood circulation, reversing hair loss and fat loss.

Interesting study put out by Harvard University:
“Few know that systematic reviews of hospital charts found that even properly prescribed drugs (aside from mis-prescribing, overdosing, or self-prescribing) cause about 1.9 million hospitalizations a year. Another 840,000 hospitalized patients are given drugs that cause serious adverse reactions for a total of 2.74 million serious adverse drug reactions. About 128,000 people die from drugs prescribed to them. This makes prescription drugs a major health risk, ranking 4th with stroke as a leading cause of death. The European Commission estimates that adverse reactions from prescription drugs cause 200,000 deaths; so together, about 328,000 patients in the U.S. and Europe die from prescription drugs each year. The FDA does not acknowledge these facts and instead gathers a small fraction of the cases.”
