Renovations are underway at the Danada House! Check out this video for a behind-the-scenes look at how Allen+Pepa, Featherstone, and the Forest Preserve District of DuPage County are working together to deliver a successful project.
Originally built in 1939, this beautiful estate is now a popular wedding venue within the scenic Danada Forest Preserve. Renovations to the building began in April to renew and restore this historic building.
The primary goals of the project include:
• Repairing and replacing aging materials
• Improving building accessibility with new ramps and a lift
• Improving energy efficiency with new lighting and insulation
• Improving safety with integrated fire protection and detection
• Improving function with surgical interior spatial reconfiguration
When complete, the building will be more functional and beautiful for the venue operators and guests. It will also be easier for the Forest Preserve District to maintain, preserving the building’s function and beauty for years to come.

We are excited that construction has begun on the LaQuinta de Los Reyes Courtyard infill project. Contractors have started demolition to clear everything out of the courtyard. Next they'll install columns and beams to support an operable louvered roof and heaters. This project will allow LaQuinta to use their patio year-round. Watch the video for a preview of what the patio will look like when completed.

We are currently under construction at the City of Batavia Government Center, a building which serves as both the City Hall and Police Station. The primary goal of this project is to make the building function better for the city and its citizens.
One example of this improvement is the remodeling of both lobbies to create a dedicated police lobby and one dedicated to City Hall functions. Prior to this project, you'd walk in the police entrance and immediately meet an open stair. These photos show the old stair filled in and a soffit around a new seating area in the police lobby.
We have also constructed a new 3-story stair off that lobby. This remodeling will create a simpler and smoother experience for citizens visiting the government center, and will improve safety and security for all building users.

On Monday, the old Kendall County Jail and Sheriff's House in Yorkville was featured on the front page of the Aurora - Beacon News. We're thrilled that we had the opportunity to work on this rehab and adaptive reuse project and proud to have designed lasting value for the building owner.
As the new owner states in the article, this is a unique building. Allen + Pepa Architects worked with Peter McKnight to transform the old sheriff's residence and garage into 5 apartments and a ground-floor commercial space. Our use of the 3D drafting and design software Revit improves the quality of not only our visualization of the buildings, but also the construction documents, making a complicated project like this more feasible.

Allen + Pepa Architects and Peter McKnight were honored to accept the Kendall County Historic Preservation Commission Award this morning, in recognition of our work to adaptively reuse the Historic Yorkville Jail and Sherriff's Residence.
This project involved the conversion of this former jail, residence, and garage into a first floor commercial space currently being used as a spa, and 5 residential units. It was truly an honor to receive this award and it would not have been possible without the hard work of our consultants, many craftsmen, the City of Yorkville, and Kendall County.

IN THE FIELD
We recently performed a Blower Door test on a local building. Here we have been hired to evaluate the performance and maintenance needs of a historical building and suggest long-term solutions. A blower door test is a great way to test a building’s airtightness, which will affect its energy efficiency. This test works by blowing air out of the building through a door. This creates a pressure differential between the inside of the building and the outside, drawing outside air in, any way it can get there. Outside air comes in through leaky seals around windows and door and even though poorly insulated walls. When temperatures are cool outside, we can use a thermal imaging camera to see exactly where this outside air is infiltrating the building, allowing us to develop effective design strategies to prevent this infiltration in the future.
