Phi Beta Kappa Presents Dr. Mary Miller The Southwestern University Phi Beta Kappa Society chapter is thrilled to welcome Dr. Mary Miller through the Visiting Scholar Program.
Dear IS students, alums, and supporters,
In opposition to the suspension of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, the Latina History Project, Feminist Studies, Latin American & Border Studies, Race & Ethnicity Studies, and International Studies assert the value to Southwestern University of undocumented students and students/staff/faculty from mixed-status families. We sit and stand in solidarity with all of those affected by this policy change and with all of those working against racism, white supremacy, and xenophobia. We understand that the uncertainty and disruption produced by these policy changes make learning more difficult, and we offer our support.
In solidarity,
The International Studies Committee

2nd film in the Spanish Interdisciplinary Film Festival!
339 Amín Abel Hasbun
This Thursday, Sept 8, at 7pm in Olin 105
Based on a real story, 339 Amín Abel Hasbun. Memory of a Crime is an intriguing account of the murder of Amín Abel Hasbun, a brilliant student leader in the Dominican Republic accused of kidnapping US Embassy official J. Crowley. Hasbun was one of many young leftists fighting against the government of Dr. Joaquín Balaguer, who favored a repressive regime.
With a plot that involved the CIA and the Dominican Republic Police Force, the film does an excellent job at deconstructing the events that took place the morning of September 24, 1970, when Amin, his wife and 2-year-old son received the fatal visit of the police and country’s District Attorney.
Discussion afterwards led by Eric Selbin.

LECTURE TODAY by Peter Hamilton, PhD
"The Networked Colony: Hong Kong, American Social Capital, and China's Globalization"
Monday, April 11 / 4:30 pm in Olin 110
ABSTRACT: In 1950, Hong Kong was poorer than most of sub-Saharan Africa. By 1990, it was wealthier per capita than Britain, its erstwhile colonial overlord. "The Networked Colony" offers a new explanation for Hong Kong's phenomenal economic development. Dr. Hamilton argues that Hong Kong went from rags to riches during the Cold War, not as "tiger" economy or as a British colony, but because its elite Chinese capitalists developed instrumental commercial and educational relationships with the United States. In turn, when Beijing initiated economic reforms in the late 1970s, Hong Kong's US-oriented elites enveloped the mainland's low-cost labor into their established networks. This project thus positions Hong Kong as the pivotal linchpin of today's enormous Sino-US trade relationship and historicizes the rise of neoliberal globalization.
BIO: Peter E. Hamilton is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at UT Austin's Institute for Historical Studies. He received his Ph.D. in History from UT Austin in August 2015. After attending Yale for his undergraduate education, Dr. Hamilton taught at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for two years with The Yale-China Association. His research has been supported by the Hong Kong-American Center and he has published articles with The International History Review, The Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society, and an anthology forthcoming from University of Hawai'i Press entitled Pacific America: Empires, Migrations, Exchanges.
