Five years ago today was the grand opening of our current location for The Laughing Academy (though we’ve been around for more than 13 years). It’s an organic thing that keeps growing and changing and evolving and each person who steps a foot in here is a part of that. Their handprints, their creativity, the echos of our shared laughter fill these halls and make The Laughing Academy what it is.

We’re thrilled to announce Kim Greene Hiller, owner and director of The Laughing Academy and former actress and writer with Second City Chicago. Kim teaches life skills through the art of improvisation. Having shared the stage with comedy legends like Tina Fey and Steve Carell, Kim brings a wealth of experience to her teachings.

In her talk, Kim opens with emphatic gibberish to illustrate how intention can be understood without clear language, a technique rooted in improvisational theater. She discusses Viola Spolin’s contributions to improv, emphasizing the importance of intuitive communication and the transformative power of the “Yes, and” principle, which fosters creativity, collaboration, and trust. Through personal anecdotes and examples from her work teaching children and adults, including corporate training sessions for Fortune 500 companies, Kim demonstrates how listening for intention and embracing the spirit of improvisation can enhance communication, build stronger relationships, and create meaningful, supportive interactions in all aspects of life.

Each camp week the kids make show posters for their show. This one ❤️. “ improv is when you get up on stage and tell a story and if you make a mistake, it’s OK because everyone is there to make each other look good”. And he also put Zat’s all folks. Because we told him when he’s playing the alphabet game by the time you get to Z everybody’s so proud of you that you can say almost anything so he always ends his alphabet game by saying “zat’s all folks”. ❤️ 🤣

We asked our K-5 campers to list the qualities that make someone a good improviser. This is the list they created. They’re picking up what we’re laying down. What you see here are also the qualities that make someone a good friend, that make someone a good citizen. What you don’t see on this list is anything about being funny. Trust me, we laugh a lot, but the comedy comes from working together and is built on trust.
