What's On Your Mind series: Jon Shears has been the owner of Guitar Haven for the past four years. He balances the store, his band, his nonprofit and his family all at once.
“I bought the store four years ago – July 28 was our opening day in 2020,” he said. “I was embraced and welcomed into the Centertown family. That’s basically what this is. Every store in this neighborhood takes care of each other, loves each other and helps each other. We do whatever we can do. That is what I am most grateful for.”
Guitar Haven is located at 17 N. Seventh St., Grand Haven.
“My beautiful, amazing wife Darbee has been behind me 100 percent. Without her I wouldn’t be able to play for my band, Roosevelt Diggs. I wouldn’t be able to be a part of my nonprofit, which I’ve been a part of for 13 years. Cheryl, who works here, who gives her 100 percent. I know if I’m not here, the store is taken care of.
“My band plays True Americana music. We’ve got seven shows in six weeks. I started playing the trombone in band in fourth grade, through middle school and high school, too. I played trombone, baritone, all the low brass instruments. My band director was a huge influence on me. He played on my first two albums, all the horn parts. I was in a punk rock band in high school and then a rock band in college. I’ve been with the band I’m with now for 16 years with four albums. We have played about 90 percent at our bucket list places. I get to live, breathe, sleep music.
“It makes me happy. It gives me a creative outlet. It gives me something to do with my brain and my hands, keeps them busy. You are never done learning. There’s always something to learn. I’ve been playing for 40 years and I just learned something a couple of weeks ago, something so simple.
“Music spans the universe,” he added. “It’s a universal language.”
