HopeWest teammate and volunteer, Briana Madison, feels a strong calling from the HopeWest mission through her passion for making a difference for children who are navigating the loss of a loved one.
Being personally impacted by loss, Brianna was inspired to volunteer as buddy for HopeWest Kids, annual Camp Good Grief for children in grades 3-8. Camp Good Grief provides a safe and compassionate environment for children's and teens, facilitated by HopeWest Kids volunteers and counselors.

A timeless donation, clock returns to its original home, the Miller Homestead.🕰🏠
“It was just me and that clock,” said Kirk Knowels. “It was the only thing in that room that moved or made noise and I just remember being fascinated with it.”
That clock, the one Kirk remembers from his childhood, sitting on the mantel in his grandmother’s house while he lay on the couch recovering from measles, was retrieved from the city dump and repaired by his grandfather. His grandmother finished the clock with delicate flowers painted on the glass.
Kirk’s grandparents, George and Esther Knowels, were the previous owners of the Miller Homestead. The property, now part of the HopeWest campus on 12th Street in Grand Junction, has been preserved for its historical significance and currently houses offices and conference rooms.
Since his grandmother’s passing the clock has been with Kirk, until last Christmas when he and his family started talking about what to do with all their family heirlooms. Kirk and his wife have been involved with HopeWest for 20 years, having personal experiences with the hospice and grief programs, and contributing as donors.
“It just seemed right that the clock went home,” said Kirk.
Inspired by an unexplainable feeling, Kirk and his family unanimously decided to bring their family treasure back to the Miller Homestead at HopeWest.

Meet Jim Grady, or as many remember him, Dr. Grady, the country veterinarian who made house calls treating livestock at farms and ranches anywhere between Mack and Palisade. He retired in '01 and said, "Mesa County has been good to him," so being active and able, he decided to volunteer at HopeWest.💛
Jim spends his Tuesday mornings picking up and delivering groceries to a patient in Mack. He then makes his scheduled visits, providing companionship to patients in our care. He also offers ongoing transportation services to patients and participants when he is able to fill requests.
"Volunteering at HopeWest is a deeply personal choice. It's not something I would push on anyone. If you feel ready for it and in the right frame of mind, then it could be a great fit for you, and it is so very helpful for patients who truly appreciate you. If not, that's okay too," he said.
Jim expressed his appreciation for the many HopeWest volunteers who work to make a difference in the lives of the people they serve. If you, like Dr. Grady, feel inspired to serve, explore our volunteer opportunities and learn more 👉 https://tinyurl.com/2fzxhz6a
The human-animal connection is a special bond in so many ways. For hospice patients, this connection can be especially beneficial by helping to provide a sense of peace, calm, and comfort.💜🐶As part of the pet therapy volunteer program at HopeWest, Sam, a three-year-old Australian Shepherd and Poodle mix, finds his way into patients’ hearts by doing just that—providing comfort through connection.
Like two old friends, Sam rested at Tim’s side, leaning into ear scratches, and searching Tim’s hands for treats. Both were visibly at ease during what was, no doubt, a mutually beneficial visit.
Like Sam and so many other HopeWest volunteers, you too can brighten a patient's day. Learn about our volunteer opportunities 👉https://tinyurl.com/2fzxhz6a

“When our mom passed away in April 2024, we already knew one way we wanted to honor her life. A former hospice volunteer, a lover of Spoons Bistro, and a recipient of excellent hospice care in the end, my mom would have loved her granite plaque that has been placed in the HopeWest garden where we often went for respite, peace, and sweet treats from Spoons.
The stars aligned and the day after her plaque was placed, my mom’s long-time book club met at Spoons to talk about books, to celebrate, and to eat dessert first!”

Our Story
Created through a community-wide vision, our founders recognized the need for comprehensive, expert and collaborative care for those facing serious illness and grief.
We cared for 81 patients and their families in 1993 – our first year of operation. Today, we serve more than 7,000 square miles with five offices and a state-of-the-art HopeWest Hospice Care Center. With a staff of 375 and more than 1,300 volunteers, we provide care to more than 2,500 patients and well-over 1,500 individuals coping with grief every year in Mesa, Delta, Montrose, Ouray and Rio Blanco Counties.
We are so much more than a hospice or health care organization. We have grown and expanded services to become a national respected model for creative and effective hospice and palliative care delivered in private homes, skilled nursing facilities, assisted-living facilities and our own Hospice Care Center.
We provide extensive bereavement services for people of all ages. Adults receive individual counseling, grief education and group support. HopeWest Kids is the only program of its kind in western Colorado providing an extensive array of creative grief services, such as: Itty bitty Camp for preschoolers, Camp Good Grief for older children and Teen Retreats for teens, equestrian therapy, and grief support groups in all grade schools, middle schools and high schools across the region.
