Interdisciplinary artist Gail Cooper invites community members to experience art through all the senses during a four-week residency with the Greensboro Residency for Original Works (GROW) program from July 23 to August 19, 2024.

In her free workshop series “Art Thru the Senses,” Cooper will explore how the creative process can be enhanced through the use of binaural beats, a term for the auditory illusion created when a person listens to different tones (musical pitches) in their left and right ears, and their brain perceives a new, third tone. After a brief introduction to sound meditation, participants will have free time to create visual artworks of their own design while listening to binaural beats. Participants will then discuss their experiences. Headphones are required for this workshop. Art supplies will be provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own if they have specific projects they wish to work on.

Cooper will also host several free workshops titled “Exploring Mindfulness thru Art,” in which she will guide participants through a fun and relaxing art project designed to enhance mindfulness through creativity. All of her workshops will last approximately two hours and will conclude with time for discussion and feedback, after which participants who wish to stay to continue working on their art are encouraged to do so.

The public can visit the GROW space to view Cooper’s paintings and learn more about her explorations of sound meditation during Downtown Greensboro’s First Friday on August 2 from 6-9pm (artist talk at 6:30pm). Cooper will also host a special birthday celebration, open to the public, on Tuesday, August 6, from 6-9pm. Cooper’s residency will culminate with a final showcase on Sunday, August 18, from 1-5pm, where participants of her workshops will also have an opportunity to display their work.

This project is supported by the North Carolina Arts Council, a division of the Department of Natural and Cultural Resources, with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.

About “The Music Man”
By turns wicked, funny, warm, and romantic and touching, “The Music Man” is family entertainment at its best. Willson's six-time, Tony award-winning musical comedy has been entertaining audiences since 1957 and is a family-friendly story to be shared with every generation.

“The Music Man” follows fast-talking traveling salesman, Harold Hill, as he cons the people of River City, Iowa, into buying instruments and uniforms for a boys' band that he vows to organize – this, despite the fact that he doesn't know a trombone from a treble clef. His plans to skip town with the cash are foiled when he falls for Marian, the librarian, who transforms him into a respectable citizen by curtain's fall.
