When we first went into the ministry, I was as naïve as a person could be. I believed people who called themselves Christians, wanted other people to be saved and would be excited when it happened. I learned, from my experiences at my first pastorate, that was not necessarily the case. While there, I was called to a deacon’s meeting where one of the deacon’s complained our church was having problems because of all the “new blood” that was coming in. The “new blood” were the people that were being saved and joining the church. The problems arose because they were not aware of how the “old guard” did things. The new people just did what they did without seeking the “old guard’s” blessings.
I also believed that when people asked to talk with me, they were genuinely wanting my help. Mostly what I dealt with early on in ministry were marital problems. After trying “everything else,” couples would come to me, in hopes I could fix whatever the issue was. And, when I couldn’t, they would always say one of two things, “Well, we talked with the pastor, but he couldn’t help us.” Or this, “Well, we tried talking to the pastor, but …” and then just let the sentence trail off while they gave those they were talking to a look that said, “That was a waste!” Every single time, that’s the way those situations would end! I soon learned; I couldn’t help anybody! I also learned, many weren’t really wanting help, they just wanted to justify what they were going to do and then add, “Well, we did try talking to the preacher.”
There is not a single problem, issue, or difficulty God cannot solve. When, in humility and sincerity, through true repentance, we come to Him with any issue, He will address it so as to accomplish His Perfect Will through whatever the situation is. That does not always mean the problem will go away – though sometimes it does – what it means is that He will give us the grace and help to get through the situation in the best way possible. Remember, “[We] can do all things through Christ who strengthens [us]!”
But even with God, we have to truly desire His help and have to be willing to do things God’s way. If after calling on God, we maintain the incorrect direction we were going that got us into this situation in the first place, God isn’t going to help us resolve that issue. If things do temporarily get better, the situation will still be boiling under the surface, waiting for the opportunity to pop back up. When it does, it will be worse than it was originally!
When people would come to me then, and when they come to me today, I tell them what Scripture says about whatever the issue is. I often get a response like, “Well, I know that’s what it says, but …” Or, “Preacher, I know what I am supposed to do, but …” And therein lies the problem; that little word “but!” Simply put, if we know what should be done, do it! If the Word of God says this or that, obey the Word of God! It’s really that simple!
Here’s another thing. God will help us through whatever any situation might be, but He doesn’t necessarily remove the consequences from situations brought on by our wrong actions. If a person has s*x outside of marriage, and both genuinely repent, and never surrender to that sin again, she might still get pregnant! If in anger we do something horrendous, we may genuinely repent, and never again lose our temper in a destructive way. But the damage that was done by that one time remains! If we drink and drive and someone dies, we may never drink again, but that person is still dead! God’s Word tells us to “flee youthful lusts,” and to “resist the devil and he will flee from you!” If we did more of that and less surrendering to the “lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life” we wouldn’t face many of the issues that give us trouble!
Sometimes, it isn’t us that are having the problems: it is someone we care deeply about. The same applies to them. If they are Christians, they should obey the Word of God as should we. When you counsel them, tell them that! Don’t pull any punches, just, in love, tell them the truth and remember: You can’t give them permanent help. Your actions might get them over a hump, but ultimately the ball is in their court. They must choose to trust and obey the Lord or not.

As April winds down, we can look back and see God has been moving very noticeably at Wrenn. This year we have seen six young people go under the waters of baptism, after confessing Christ publicly. More have stated they were saved during the Good News Clubs and Youth, and we are waiting to see how they will respond. God has answered numerous prayers for salvation and also prayers for healing. I won’t list all the names, but several have overcome cancer, and serious surgeries (Aren’t all surgeries serious?). Prayers have been answered concerning job loss and other situations. God is proving He is very much active and at work in those who seek His face!
We must believe God wants to bless, to save, to heal and to help His children in their needs! We must take to Him not just our requests, but our thanks and our simple praise! Sometimes we ought to just stop and talk to Him about whatever! No agenda, just “Hey Father, it’s me Jim (Well, of course you’ll use your name!). I just wanted to tell you thanks for helping me get that pergola finished and looking good! Couldn’t have done it at all without the strength you provide me! I plan on cutting the grass today. Boy, you have really sent us the rain and everything is so green! Thank you, Lord!”
What’s wrong with talking to Him like you would your earthly father, or your spouse or your closest friend? Why do we think everything has to be all planned out and liturgical or we’re being dishonorable to God? He hears whatever we say any way, so just talk to Him! Our sin is not failing to use the correct words or correct form, our sin is failing to remember He is with us every moment of every day, and He wants to hear from us all the time! It is an amazing thing about God our Father, that He can listen to me and you and everybody else all at the same time, and hear every word, know every need and answer each prayer AT THE SAME TIME! That’s because He is God!
What’s more, He wants us to come BOLDLY to His throne of Grace! Not with fear and trepidation, but with the confidence that He loves us, wants to hear from us, and is faithful and just to forgive us our sins when we humbly repent, seek His face, and ask Him! I hear from many people they hesitate to pray, because they are continuously failing in one area or another, and feel guilty to keep confessing the same thing over and over. He understands that. Look at these verses, “For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him. As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us. Like as a father pitieth his children, so the LORD pitieth them that fear him. For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.” Psalm 103:11 – 14. To that, I say “Hallelujah!”
Look at the conversation Jesus had with Peter in, Matthew 18:21, 22, “Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times? Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.” Do we think God does not apply this same principal to Himself? If we continue to struggle and fail, it doesn’t mean we will not reap the rewards of our failure. WE WILL! But it doesn’t mean we can’t talk to Him about it. We should. Actually, we must. He knows what we have done, He saw it, He heard it, and He was deeply hurt by our actions. So, every time we fail, let’s confess it in prayer. Seek His forgiveness, and then run away when the temptation returns. But, never, ever stop talking to God!
