If you carry a firearm, you should also consider carrying an IFAK (Individual First Aid Kit). You are more likely to need an IFAK (for yourself or others) than your firearm. Be sure to include a tourniquet, chest seals, gloves, and wound packing material with a hemostatic agent. Scissors and a sharpie are also good to have.

Now that you're equipped, be sure to take a Stop The Bleed course so that you can learn how to best use the items in your IFAK.

A Little Walk Back in History

The very first AR15 sales ad ever, was marketed to the public as a sporting and hunting rifle in 1963. After testing in Vietnam the military adopted the full auto version, the actual assault rifle, the M16 in 1964.

While many people are trying to rewrite history and claim the inventor never intended it for civilian use. Well, that is less than accurate. People are always entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts.

The lady circled in the photo was Lucy Higgs Nichols. She was born into slavery in Tennessee, but during the Civil War she managed to escape and found her way to 23rd Indiana Infantry Regiment which was encamped nearby. She stayed with the regiment and worked as a nurse throughout the war.

After the war, she moved north with the regiment and settled in Indiana, where she found work with some of the veterans of the 23rd.

She applied for a pension after Congress passed the Army Nurses Pension Act of 1892 which allowed Civil War nurses to draw pensions for their service. The War Department had no record of her, so her pension was denied. Fifty-five surviving veterans of the 23rd petitioned Congress for the pension they felt she had rightfully earned, and it was granted.

The photograph shows Nichols and other veterans of the Indiana regiment at a reunion in 1898. Beloved by the troops who referred to her as “Aunt Lucy,” Nichols was the only woman to receive an honorary induction into the Grand Army of the Republic, and she was buried in an unmarked grave in New Albany with full military honors in 1915.

Prepare for Possible Winter Weather:

Columbia, S.C. (Thursday, January 13, 2022) – Residents in the Upstate and Midlands regions of South Carolina should monitor local weather conditions and continue winter safety precautions ahead of potential winter weather this weekend. Forecasters with the National Weather Service predict the possibility of a wintry mix of snow, sleet, ice and rain beginning Saturday evening and into Sunday morning. Forecasters expect below freezing temperatures to last through the start of next week, particularly at night.

Motorists need to prepare for winter weather driving before a winter storm hits, especially those living in the Upstate or areas of our state that see more severe winter weather conditions. The South Carolina Highway Patrol urges motorists to check the weather forecast frequently and stay informed before and while traveling because conditions can deteriorate rapidly. Troopers will be monitoring the roadways for hazardous road conditions during weather events and working with our partners to respond as quickly as possible.

Residents should remember the following winter safety precautions:

· During winter storm weather, it is best to stay off the roads for unnecessary travel. If you must travel, ensure your vehicle is in good condition. Check the fluids, battery, and tires. Ensure that your phone is charged and you have extra blankets and snacks in case of delays. Call 911 for life-threatening emergencies only.
· Remember to keep a full charge on your cell phone and mobile devices so they can be used during an emergency.
· If you lose power, know how to report the outage to your utility company and have alternate, safe means of staying warm.
· Monitor local media for information about warming shelters opened by local organizations.
· Freezing temperatures can burst water pipes in homes without heat or proper insulation. Wrap exposed pipes or take other measures to insulate them from the cold.
· Keep alternative heating sources prepared. If you have a fireplace, store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure your family knows how to use them.
· Properly vent kerosene heaters to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning. Also, do not burn charcoal indoors. Carbon monoxide poisoning can result from charcoal fumes indoors.
· Never operate a portable generator indoors.
· Keep fresh batteries on hand to use with flashlights and NOAA tone-alert weather radios.
· Provide some options for outdoor pets and domestic animals to stay warm and to have access to food and water.
· Check on anyone who may need extra help during winter weather.
· The official South Carolina Severe Winter Weather Guide contains checklists and tips on how to prepare for a winter storm. The guide is available for download at scemd.org.

The South Carolina Emergency Management Division works closely with the S.C. Department of Public Safety, the state Dept. of Transportation, the S.C. Dept. of Natural Resources, the S.C. National Guard and all National Weather Service offices serving South Carolina to share the latest information about the storm and its possible impact.

SCEMD Director Kim Stenson is coordinating with all county emergency managers to make sure there are no unmet needs in terms of winter storm response resources.

Be cautious this weekend!

01/14/2022

Milk and bread are tasty, but when preparing for the upcoming winter weather, make sure to stock up on practical items in case the power goes out. It would be a good idea to have a supply of batteries, flashlights, candles, matches, blankets, canned goods, needed medications, bottled water, and check the status of your generator if you have one.
