Acton Academy Founders Conference in Austin is full of inspiration. I can't believe this journey is an opportunity for our family, community and just the world we live in today.
Laura Sandefer's reminder of "enjoying" the journey is a life lesson. Seven Acton Launch Padders have an articulation and perspective that will leave you wowed. A mission of love learning and getting along with other people. Here is a quote that resonates:
"I use to only be focused on me, and have a fixed mindset; I wanted to be right over the process. Now I realize that the journey is more important than the end result."
Children are natural learners - full of curiosity and excitement about the world around them.
They are not afraid to fall down or make mistakes. They are not afraid to ask question after question and explore deeply to discover new answers. Most even believe they have superpowers that could change the world. This is the energy we work to fuel at Acton Academy.
The last few weeks have been one for the books. Learners wrapped up one session and showcased their skills of "learning to do" on an Acton family camping trip (which we will definitely be going back to visit)! The end of one session also brings on the excitement of new beginnings. I thought this last session would be hard to match the energy but this one may top it. How is learning so fun?!? My mind keeps replaying how I wish I had gone to a school like this. What a monumental few weeks; trials and all ❤️
Our learners (also known as Heros) experience a well composed flow for their day. From Socratic discussions to Quests (aka hands on projects). They are especially loving this sessions Writer's Workshop.
They started with watching a pitch from Shark Tank and then were challenged to write their own pitch for a studio pet. Their energy was so high! They immediately began researching and then composing a convincing pitch that they will practice in front of their studiomates for feedback to strengthen their performance and details. The end of the session will provide them with the opportunity to pitch to the parents who will then vote on whether it was a persuasive presentation. We can't wait! The Heros will either celebrate and move forward with inviting in their pet of choice into the studio, or they will learn the importance of failure. That perseverance and grit are more important than raw talent.
Heros are not someone who succeeds, but someone who always gets back up and tries again. Failure can and should sting at times; but the courage to try again should always be celebrated.
The day in the life of Acton has structure but each day is so different and refreshing. Tuesdays we do art with a Waldorf art teacher. Todays project was to make bowls out of coconuts. It was challenging, engaging, rewarding and even tasty!
What a day! Yesterday's intimate gathering turned into 65+ pol indoors because of the rain. I couldn't have loved being squished with anyone more 😂 The in depth conversations that surface within Acton is a powerful force. There already is so much support for the school but mostly for each other. I'm rooting for each family to find their path. It's definitely worth searching for.
My favorite part of the day was when a group of girls noticed that some families were waiting for the rain to stop. So they decided to greet them with umbrellas to help 💕
If developing character and community are your jam, drop us a DM. It could be the pivot you are yearning for.
We've been planning a family social for future Acton families we have been chatting with about this semester or the fall. We'd love to extend the invitation to you as well. Families that are wanting to gather information or connect with our Acton community.
The date is this Saturday from 3-5pm. Praying for clear skies, but right now you can expect fire pit, s'mores, and good company. We will be gathering rain or shine though! Shoot us a dm if you are interested. Looking forward to meeting you soon!
I couldn't imagine a more perfect beginning to a school year! Today was a monumental day. It was the first day of the rest of these Hero's journey. And even my own. Our whole lives have led us to this point. We are now on a path to find our callings and share them with the world.
We thought it may be fitting to do a traditional first day of school picture but the Acton way!
Bring on 2024, guys!! We are ready to move mountains.
PS The three of them chose what to write on the letter board. And Hello! We now have our new hashtag!
PSS Our next session: jumping for joy may make you levitate 😂
Acton really does turn learning upside down. Shakes it up a bit. This is one clear example of how it's done. The Acton model is so unique that it is quite hard to explain since we are so accustomed to it being the same model for over 100 years.
So today's lesson (for us parents!) is the difference between a guide and a traditional teacher. No tests will be given 😆 The perk is future generations being invited into an environment where they cannot wait to learn!
Meet the Founders! Hi, we are Andy and Carrie Turner. Proud parents of Evan (8) and Elyse (4). Andy is a residential real estate agent who spends his hours providing high level of customer satisfaction. He was in fine dining hospitality for over a decade and still loves meeting new people. Carrie handles marketing for multiple clients, and produces occasional events for past clients. After having children, she has become passionate about giving them the freedom to make choices, do hard things and enjoy the journey. With both of us being entrepreneurs, it has become a family value for each of us to find our own personal path and fulfillment. And that starts now through Acton Academy and the founding families who desire something different for their children.
Coming January 2024!
"You're starting a school?
What kind of school?"
I get asked all the time "What makes yours different?".
I would've felt the same way.
But y'all. I don't know any other way to describe it. This is not the school you are thinking of. This school is what dreams are made of. Today. Tomorrow. And for the next generation. This is the school I would've wanted to go to when I was a child.
Gamification learning. Self regulated learning. Project based learning. Peer learning. Critical thinking learning. The type of learning that sets you free from the stigma of the world. The kind that will put you closer to what you can imagine you can be. The kind that lifts you up. Inspires you. Motivates you. Thriving is not an option. It's what happens. Thriving academically but most importantly as a whole person.
These learners will go into the world ready to contribute in a big way. Who is ready to set their child on path that will change their world but also the world itself? I. Can't. Wait. Greenville will be so thankful.
Did you know there are over 15,000 hours spent at a traditional school? Just think of what can be accomplished during that amount of time. What if your child could spend that time building character traits and digging into what they love?
Do you also desire the flexibility to travel during the school year? And also not be tied to doing homework everyday? Acton is a win win! The calendar year is divided into six segments with one week off in between each one. Plus there is no attendance or homework!
School, as we know it today, was designed in 1893. Acton Academy is one of the newest and most innovative (and downright coolest) school designs in the world. It is one of the most important education developments we yet to see. Be prepared to be inspired.
Do you believe your child has the potential to change the world?
Do you believe learning to do and learning to be are more important than textbooks alone?
Do you believe in a closely connected family of lifelong learners?
Then perhaps Acton Academy is for you and your family.
Acton Academy was founded in Austin, TX in 2009 by parents who were searching for an alternative approach to education for their children. Refusing to settle for a broken model of schooling, Jeff and Laura Sandeter started the first Acton Academy campus with humble beginnings as a one-room schoolhouse.
The alternative educational model has been sweeping the globe ever since with 300+ learner-driven schools. We are grateful to bring the wonder and revolution to Greenville, SC!
We are still in search of a location and will keep you in the loop. Let us know if you have an idea or lead. We are dreaming of an outdoor space for a garden and farm animals. What are you envisioning or hoping for?
