Disposable e-ci******es sold in the U.S. nearly tripled in ni****ne strength, quintupled in e-liquid capacity, and dropped in price by nearly 70% between 2017 and 2022, according to a recent Truth Initiative® study published in To***co Control. The study of e-cigarette sales data finds that 2022 alone saw the debut of 48 disposable e-ci******es with 6% or greater ni****ne strength as well as 18 products with a 20-milliliter capacity – 29X the size of a JUUL pod.

The research suggests that those with higher levels of e-cigarette addiction may be more likely to seek help quitting.

Since the 1950s, the to***co industry has targeted Black Americans with pervasive marketing of menthol ci******es through sponsorship of community and music events, free sampling, magazine advertising and retail promotions. This aggressive marketing has created large racial disparities in terms of menthol cigarette consumption with nearly 83.1% of Black Americans who smoke menthol ci******es, compared to 31.6% of White Americans who smoke menthol ci******es. To***co use is the number one cause of preventable death among Black Americans, claiming 45,000 Black lives every year and is a major contributor to heart disease, cancer and stroke. A number of states have increased legal access to cannabis products recently, with 38 states plus D.C. legalizing medical cannabis, 27 states plus D.C. decriminalizing the possession of cannabis, and 20 states plus D.C. legalizing cannabis for adult recreational use. Although overall cannabis use patterns nationwide have remained steady, including among youth in states where cannabis is legal, va**ng cannabis as a commonly used method of consumption is on the rise.

Cannabis and to***co products (including ci******es, e-ci******es, and smokeless to***co products) are two of the most commonly used substances among U.S. youth. To***co and cannabis use patterns are also evolving, and many teens are combining the two products. Among youth aged 12-17, co-use of cannabis and to***co is more prevalent than using both substances by themselves.
