We hope everyone is safe after this devastating storm. If you’re still without power and just need to do some retail therapy in the air condition swing on by!
For truing edges, nothing beats the speed and efficiency of a power jointer. But there are times when you need to pull the plug. For example, short stock can tip into the gap between the infeed and outfeed tables and kick back, leaving your hands with a clear path to the spinning knives.
This doesn’t render short boards useless, provided you have an alternate method for jointing them. When the going gets short, simply reach for a hand plane.

Do you have a love for Purpleheart?
Except for a handful of vegetables, flowers, and minerals, purple is one of the scarcest colors found on the planet. For that reason, it is no wonder that purpleheart is the only commercial wood of that color, captivating woodworkers who scout for something eye-catching.

What questions do you have for Alex Snodgrass? We are filming with Alex soon, and want to know what topics you'd like us to cover with The Bandsaw Master himself.
Sometimes a small project is just the thing to fill up a little bit of shop time. It’s even better when you get the opportunity to transform some scrap stock into a nice gift or an addition to your home. This serving tray scores well on both counts. Folding legs enable the tray to sit flat on a table or have an elevated stance.

Have you started using a CNC machine in your woodworking?
Woodworking can take any number of directions and is often impacted by advances in technology. Once you get the hang of using it, you’ll be amazed at what it can do.

The No. 6, also called a "fore" hand plane is good for jointing edges and flattening and smoothing large surfaces, such as table tops, panels and workbench tops, where you might not want or need the length or weight of a larger plane. The extra length and width of the sole enables it to shave bumps and bridge valleys 7/8” wide better than a shorter plane. Weighing in at a stout 7-3/4 pounds, this plane's additional heft makes it easier for you to shave difficult stock without breaking a sweat

Flattening stock may not be elementary, but it is an essential woodworking skill.
Most woodworking starts with a flat reference face. A shop full of heavy machinery can help, but there are instances when you must rely on muscle power.
When boards are too big for your jointer, or you don't have one available to you, take the path of least resistance and use a combination of hand and power tools to get the job done.

What is the easiest wood to woodwork with?
A truly useful woodworking bench serves a lot of needs. It secures all kinds of workpieces for operations ranging from rough stock prep to detailed handwork. It offers a flat planing and assembly surface, and provides a suitable platform for a wide variety of hand and power tool operations.
This bench is a slight departure from a more traditional woodworking bench, it's made entirely out of plywood.

Woodturning provides quick gratification, because many smaller projects can easily be completed in a single evening, allowing even the beginner woodworker to relax and experience a sense of accomplishment.
With the number and variety of woodturning tools present though, tool selection can be a confusing task for the beginner woodturner. Knowing the strengths of gouges, skews, scrapers and parting tools can help make choosing the right tool an easier task.
