It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Past Grand Madam President Shirley Johnson, Missoula, Mont., Auxiliary #32.

Shirley joined the organization in 1964 as a member of the Missoula Auxiliary and immediately became involved, joining the drill team and marching on their Class A Es**rt Team, Class A Mixed Drill Team and Class A Field Drill Team. In 1967, she began competing on the Ritual Team and was captain of the Class A Ritual and Drill Teams and co-captain of the Class A Mixed Teams.

Shirley served as Madam President in 1970-1971 and again in 1980-1981 and was named Montana State Madam President in 1982.

She served as State Membership Chairmen for more than 20 years and was honored as the State Aerie Mother in 1994-1995 and State Auxiliary Grandmother in 2005-2006. She joined the Grand Auxiliary family in 1985 at the International Convention in Denver, Colo., before being installed as Grand Auxiliary President at the 40th Annual International Auxiliary Convention in Cincinnati, Ohio, in Aug. 1991.

Shirley was an elementary school teacher, a campfire girls leader, boy scout council officer, auction clerk for the local catholic high school, secretary and computer operator for her husband’s business and office manager for her son’s hardwood flooring business. She retired in 2001 to travel with her husband, Ted, as he continued his 50-year outside sales career before he passed away in 2007.

She and her husband had three daughters, two sons, and multiple grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Ted and Shirley were also foster parents for 14 years, having parented 30 children, two of which continued to play a role in Shirley’s life.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Shirley’s family and her many friends inside the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Her burial will take place at the Missoula Cemetery on Friday, July 12, at 2 p.m. A memorial service is planned at the Missoula Eagles on Saturday, July 13, at 1 p.m. Cards can be sent to the family at 855 Lost Mine Loop, Missoula, MT 59803.
