Today is the final day to nominate a SWCSD staff member for the 2024 School Bell Awards! 🔔

Annually, we canvas our families, students, and community members for staff nominations and stories about a SWCSD team member who went above and beyond this school year. Awardees will be recognized in April at our SWCSD Employee Awards Gala along with honorees from the SWCS Council of PTA's.

All submissions will be shared with the staff member who receives them whether they are named a 2024 winner or not.

Dr. Wise has been a great leader for our district and community. We wish him the best and thank him for all he has done for SWCS!

At tonight's regular meeting of the South-Western City School District (SWCSD) Board of Education, the board was informed by Superintendent Dr. Bill Wise of his intent to retire prior to the expiration of his current contract.

**Dr. Wise will continue as Superintendent through August 1, 2024.

While many school districts see more routine turnover in the position due to the high demands associated with the role (less than five years on average according to the School Superintendents Association (AASA)), SWCSD has been incredibly fortunate to have had the steadfast leadership of Dr. Wise at the helm of Ohio’s fifth largest school system for the past 17 years - overseeing a period of significant growth in an array of different areas.

Dr. Wise’s tenure with the district is one marked by both sustainability and continuity, leaving indelible impressions on the lives of thousands of students over the course of nearly two decades.

Dr. Wise was originally hired as Superintendent in October 2007. Prior to that, Dr. Wise first made his way to the district in 2002 where he previously served the district as both Deputy Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum.

During his tenure as Superintendent of South-Western City Schools:

- The district has made significant infrastructure advancements to enhance student learning outcomes with the building of 13 new state-of-the-art elementary schools, four new middle schools, one new high school, and various other site development projects.
- Oversaw the implementation of full day kindergarten with the building of new elementary schools in 2013.
- The district has not been in a position to ask taxpayers for operating funds since 2009 and is projected to be in the black for the next five years.
- Graduated approximately 21,660 students (as of May 2023) across all high schools since 2008.
- Created the Accelerated Learning Center (ALC) in 2016, an in-house college preparatory program for high school students to pursue college credit and earn associate degrees in two or three year pathways.
- Finally, in large part thanks to Dr. Wise’s vision and leadership, the district achieved the highest graduation rate ever earned in the history of the school system dating back to 1956.

After careful consideration, the South-Western City School District (SWCSD) will hold a scheduled early-release on Monday, April 8, 2024 due to the total solar eclipse set to take place that afternoon. 🎇As a result of the early release, all evening activities to include rehearsals, practices, and athletics/extra-curricular contests will also be canceled. The April 8 date had been previously earmarked as a full day of learning on the 2023-2024 academic calendar.

In an effort for families to plan accordingly, transportation and building schedules have been amended for this day and early release times are as follows:

➡️ Elementary Schools: 12:15 p.m.
➡️ Intermediate Schools: 1:15 p.m.
➡️ Middle Schools: 1:15 p.m.
➡️ High Schools: 11:30 a.m.
➡️ Preschool: No sessions will be held

Although the direct centerline of total eclipse viewing falls north of our attendance boundaries, the District arrived at the decision to proceed with an early release out of an abundance of caution for student safety who otherwise would be in transit home on a regularly scheduled school day at that time.

Students and Staff to receive Protective Eyewear🕶
Recognizing the educational importance of this rarer scientific event, every student (at parent discretion) in the District (and staff member) will have the opportunity to take home solar eclipse glasses in advance of April 8 that are compliant with the international safety standard for protective eyewear (ISO 12312-2). The 2024 Total Solar Eclipse offers students and families an educational opportunity to observe this incredibly rare astrological event - the first of its kind within view in Ohio since 1806.

Looking ahead to April 8, we ask families to reinforce safe viewing practices with their students by reminding them that they should never look directly at the sun once home for the day without the proper eyewear, according to the State of Ohio Eclipse Task Force. For more information and educational resources, visit eclipse.ohio.gov.
