If you or you have patients suffering from problems or injury to the brain including depression, anxiety, cognitive decline, headaches, ADHD, addiction, traumatic brain injury (TBI), post concussion syndrome, and other problems; please read on.

Light up the Brain

(WARNING: GEEK ALERT)
Photobiostimulation is the use of red light and near infrared laser has been around for a long time. It is a very safe, non-invasive, drug free, and pain free way to treat pain and injury. It is used by chiropractors, physical therapists, veterinarians, and may even be found in orthopedic surgeon’s offices. More recently, the transcranial application of photobiostimulation, or tPBM, is emerging as a valuable therapeutic approach for treating problems in the brain. Its use in the treatment of traumatic brain injury, concussions, and stroke were the starting point for medical research. Now researchers are looking at tPBM for the treatment of other problems in the brain such as PTSD, depression, cognitive decline, ADHD, addiction, and even migraines. Unfortunately, while clinicians are slowly gaining an understanding of many of the wonderful biological effects of transcranial photobiostimulation (tPBM); there remains no consensus on its therapeutic application. Many conflicting studies and varying researchers’ opinions have clouded the acceptance of tPBM and impeded its clinical implementation.

Agreement on whether high-power lasers, low-power lasers, or LEDs best achieve therapeutic benefit is lacking. However, we know that optimum health in the brain and organ systems of the body are associated with coherent states. Likewise, lack of health and disease condition exhibit noncoherent states. I feel that it is worth pointing out that lasers emit coherent light in single uniform wavelength, while LEDs emit noncoherent light because the light spread over a narrow band of wavelengths. The noncoherent bandwidth would be expected to impact the potential for LEDs to optimally stimulate desired tissues. Additionally, proponents of therapeutic use of LEDs and low powered lasers lack an adequate explanation for how these light instruments, which lack the power to physically pe*****te and deliver sufficient photon energy to target tissues well below the skin, produces any biochemical effects.
The fact these questions remain unresolved and the continuing lack of demonstrable consensus suggests that researchers have been asking the wrong questions. Research has been limited to the biochemistry of the brain, its proteins, and neurons. It has neglected to consider that behavioral and perceptual states of the brain are correlated with coherency of measurable rhythmic oscillations and resonant states in neurons.

There are naturally occurring frequencies called eigenfrequencies produced throughout the body, that take on added significance in the brain as they are tied to consciousness and memory. These resultant oscillations and resonant states are seen collectively as waves on EEGs. The brain eigenfrequencies are coupled to a systemic electromagnetic potential, or phase (𝜑), which provides a physical state where all neuronal components function in phase-correlated unison. A coherent informational quantum code, described by spatio-spectral eigenmodes of brain waves and neural networks, characterizes brain functional states. Interactions between remote regions in the human brain demonstrate a phase synchronization between different frequency ranges to produce perceptual, motor, and cognitive processes. Interestingly, it has been shown that the sum of coherent and decoherent frequencies reflect the health of the brain and its subsystems.

The importance of resonance to tPBM therapy is this. Properly, selected laser spectrum and pulse frequencies that are near known eigenfrequencies will synchronize coherent oscillation of brain waves through a process of entrainment. Entrainment of brain oscillations also affects the brain’s microsystem oscillations at harmonic and subharmonic multiples through a process of cross-frequency coupling. One might simply describe these effects as a retuning or recalibrating these microsystems thus re-establishing a healthy coherent-decoherent state in the brain’s dysfunctional or injured microsystems.

As a clinician, I have already begun incorporating known advances in our understanding of eigenfrequency modulation for the benefit of my laser patients. Not surprisingly, response to laser therapy has been such that I can think of no other therapeutic modality that I have used over 34+ years of clinical practice that can match properly delivered class 4 laser therapy.

If you use laser therapy in your practice, I urge you to familiarize yourself with eigenfrequencies and how to utilize your laser to therapeutically deliver harmonic and semi-harmonic resonance to patients. Many class 4 medical laser may deliver noncoherent light frequencies and lack or limit the clinician's control over pulsing.

If you, or someone you know, may need treatment for problems or injury to their brain, try to find a doctor who not only provides tPBM, but also is familiar the importance of coherent resonance and uses this in his/her therapy protocol.

Many people don't realize their migraine headaches are actually secondary to occipital neuralgia. This is why botox injection and radio frequency ablation (RFA uses heat to destroy the occipital nerves) is often prescribed for treatment. However, there is a safer, less invasive, and highly effective treatment to relieve your migraine in less than a minute, and provide lasting relief to the problem of occipital neuralgia in as little as 2-4 weeks.
