Soaring to New Heights - our staff kicked off the first day of PreService training!

Preservice training brings our team together to stay updated on policies & procedures and invigorated to start the new school year! We can't wait to see students back in our Head Start classrooms on August 5!

When Kash Barnett started preschool, his vocabulary consisted of just five words.

But that’s all changed since he enrolled at Gaston Point Head Start in Gulfport. His mom, Diamond Charles, attributes much of his progress to the teachers and the program, which is managed and delivered by the Mississippi State University Extension Service.

We share knowing so many of Dr. Davis' colleagues followed along with her projects. We continue the MS Child Care Resource & Referral, MSU Extension Nurturing Homes Initiative, and MSU Extension - Head Start programs with the same passion she led with - helping families and children across our state.

It is with great sadness that we must inform you of the passing of our dear MSU Extension colleague and friend, Dr. Louise Davis.

Dr. Davis began her career in early childhood education as a teacher in a rural Mississippi classroom. Children have been her passion ever since.

After leaving the classroom she served in behind-the-scenes leadership roles that touched the lives of children across this state.

She began her Extension career in 1995 because she believed in the mission of providing research-based educational programs throughout all 82 counties in the state.

Dr. Davis led the Mississippi Child Care Resource and Referral Network, which is comprised of five programs to support young children and their caretakers. The network provides resources, training, and referral services to help ensure that Mississippi children are being cared for in quality settings by knowledgeable and well-equipped providers.

Her programs not only helped professional childcare providers, but also families and others who care for young children. Numerous parents, grandparents, child-care directors, and home-based providers have benefitted from more than a dozen centers around the state which provide learning materials free of charge.

Dr. Davis has truly had a positive impact on the lives of countless children around the state.

During the coming days and weeks, please keep the family, friends and coworkers of Dr. Davis in your thoughts and prayers.
