Huge Thanks to Sony volunteers for hosting an end-of-school year outing at Humdingers for children at a YCS residence. The inaugural YCS Southern Region DD Quarterly Employee Spotlight” recognized the outstanding work performance of 12 employees representing each of the YCS DD homes in the south. Under the leadership of YCS VP Dawn Jones, the program managers put their hearts into creating an inspired evening for all the honorees. The Somerdale YCS headquarters conference room was transformed into a ballroom, tables were set for royalty and true to YCS Southern Region charm, the dinner was prepared by the staff; gift baskets were personally filled to the brim with treats, and every recipient received a hand-written thank you card.

The scotching heat did not deter families from attending the Parents as Teachers (PAT) graduation at Washington Park in Union City. Thirty moms, dads and their little ones gathered for one final time to celebrate their completion of the program. Every parent eagerly shared what PAT meant to them through tears of gratitude and appreciation. Many determined to stay in touch with their parent educator as they now thought of them as friends. Congratulations to all the families. We wish you the best of luck in the future as your families grow and thrive.
The YCS PAT is based on a national evidence-based, home-visitor model that provides comprehensive parent education to ensure that babies, toddlers, and preschoolers have a strong foundation for success in kindergarten and beyond. PAT does this by focusing on supporting parents/caregivers as their child's first teacher. Parents as Teachers National Center

YCS Lawnridge Home host events to foster family connections.
Mark Robinson, YCS Lawnridge Program Director, piloted a new initiative to improve the involvement of parents in the lives of their sons. The 1st Dads & Kids Pancake Breakfast was held in May and was followed by the 1st Moms & Kids Chicken & Waffles Brunch in June. Both breakfasts were well attended by dads, moms, and family members. "The boys were all smiles and full of excitement for their families coming to eat breakfast with them...It allowed for the boys and their parents to strengthen their family bonds," explained Mark, adding, "The parents said they appreciated the invitation to eat breakfast with their sons and everyone enjoyed the food.” The spirit of this initiative extended beyond the breakfasts and was evident as family members came out for the Hawaiin themed BBQ that the YCS Lawnridge Home hosted over the weekend.

Juneteenth, Freedom Day, commemorates the end of slavery in the United States on June 19th, 1865, a pivotal moment in the fight for freedom and equality. Tomorrow, as we celebrate this day, let us also reflect on that moment in our history and appreciate how it has made us a stronger and more inclusive nation.

The YCS Parent Linking Program (PLP) at Eastside High, in Paterson, is a lifeline for students who are expecting a child or are new moms or dads. Participants meet every week for a group discussion about what to expect during their pregnancies, how to care for their new babies, and much more. Recently, moms currently enrolled in the program, PLP graduates and family members gathered with their children for an end-of-year celebration. Several moms shared their gratitude for the program and their counselors: “My counselor has helped me learn how to manage my babies sleep so I can get up in the morning and go to school,” said one high school senior. Another mom who graduated the program in 2023, said her counselor is like her “second mother” that she can always call for advice. Prevent Child Abuse New Jersey

There are so many folks to acknowledge for the success of the 17 Annual YCS Blossoms Art Exhibit & Awards Show at the bergenPAC (Bergen Performing Arts Center). The artwork was amazing and the messages behind each piece reflected the children’s sensitivity and hearts. The performances were electrifying including several songs that got the Pac rocking, a riveting praise dance to “Break the Chains,” two powerful self-affirming raps, and a piano performance. We are forever grateful to Helene Cohen, gallery curator and Vanessa Tyler our special guest awards presenter and a very dear friend to all the children at YCS. Shout out to Steve Hegel and the stage lighting and sound crew for making sure the children shined on stage, and Alexander Diaz, PAC executive director. A special thanks to Senator Holly Schepisifor sending an official ceremonial proclamation. and lastly but certainly not least a very heartfelt thank you to Justin Shaw, our MC

The youth at Sayre House had an opportunity to participate at the Child Wellness Institute ChildWIN's 8-week Youth Resiliency Group for the second year in a row. Due to their participation and dedication throughout the 8 weeks, Bella and Jordyn were selected to speak at ChildWin's Annual Gala. Bella and Jordyn worked hard on preparing and practicing their speeches weeks leading up to the Gala and were excited to share their stories. The speeches were about their journey in residential, what they've learned and how the Youth Resiliency Groups impacted their lives. The youth each invited their mothers to attend the Gala alongside them. Bella and Jordyn had a great night where they got to dress up, enjoy live music, meet professional athletes, and share their inspirational stories with everyone in the room. by Aimee Briscoe
