😀📚It’s a NEW reading challenge beginning today! Yay for August! This months reading challenge is a fun one , it’s to read a book whose title starts with the same letter as your birthday month! Let us know what you’ve chosen to read ! Can’t wait to hear some of them!

📚😃Janet's MA Center for the Book July challenge book is "Roman Stories" by Jhumpa Lahiri, an author born in Great Britain who now resides in Italy. She translated the book from Italian with some help from Todd Portnowitz. This is a book of short stories all taking place in Rome, Italy. In Part I, the reader feels the seperateness of the Rome natives with foreign immigrants. Lahiri's writing is concise and descriptive. The reader takes on the feelings of the characters. The immigrant is an outsider trying for acceptance and the local people love the routine or they are yearning for excitement. All of the stories in Part II take place at "The Steps". Many perspectives of life are explored -- good and bad. Part III deals with loss and yearning. To gain what was lost or to finally "fit in". All of these short stories will stay in your heart and make you reflect on them and yourself.😃📚

About the Book and Tradition:
Moving on to a new school year is a big step. This tradition helps to balance the first day of school jitters with a focus on the fun preparations of a new school year. 🍎

Mac is an adorable stuffed apple, and at the end of summer his main goal is to get kids excited about school.
As a family, read the book together to start the tradition and watch the fun begin. During the day your children involve him in their activities and at night (with some parental persuasion) Mac’s magic comes alive. He leaves treats, plays tricks or sometimes leaves a small back-to-school gift (like a cool pencil or a new box of crayons). On the first day of school Mac poses for a picture with your children to capture their annual tradition. Mac’s magic gets put away on the first day of school and all can look forward to it returning the next year. But from time to time his magic has been known to pop up during the school year, which makes for a wonderful surprise!

😀📚Joeys pick this week is the #1 bestseller “ The God of the Woods” by Liz Moore 🌲🌲
If you haven’t read this yet it should be your next summer mystery read ! This book is so good and you definitely want to just keep reading .
This story takes place at a survival camp during the 50’s and 70’s. A young girl, Barbara, goes missing . Twenty years before that her younger brother Bear had gone missing . The story is told from the perspective of many of those involved and you get so pulled into this story that you can absolutely picture these characters ( The author does an amazing job with the characterization ) and you just can’t put the book down. It is beautifully written , and I highly highly recommend this book! I always want to shout from the rooftop when I absolutely love a book and this is absolutely one of those ! You’ve got to read this ! 😍📚🌲🌲

😃📚Janet's pick this week is the middle grade historical fiction novel, "Safiyyah's War" by Hiba Noor Khan. From the perspective of a fictional eleven year old girl, Safiyyah, the reader learns how the Muslim community living in Paris, France and the religious leaders at the Grand Mosque of Paris saved many Jewish lives during the German occupation of Paris during World War II. By joining with the French Resistance, they were able to issue new ID's to Jewish neighbors and eventually aid their escape through the tunnels and catacombs under the city and onto ships hidden in wine barrels traveling out of Paris. The book deals with the aiding of Jews and alludes to the tragedies if caught and imprisoned. Be prepared to cry in sadness and joy.📚😃📚

📚😃Joanne's pick this week is a debut legal thriller murder mystery set in a small Southern town in 2017, "When Cicadas Cry" by Caroline Cleveland. Told from several perspectives including Zach, the white attorney retained by the black defendant's grandfather, Addie, Zach's investigator/fiance, and the killer; the story includes two mysteries: the current one being handled by Zach and the cold case being investigated by Addie. Joanne enjoyed the characters, details of the investigations and procedures, and the twists. Lies, secrets, racial judgement, desperate choices make an intriguing storyline mix.😃📚😀 📚

Kendra’s pick is the novel which is now in paperback , Mrs. Plansky’s Revenge by Spencer Quinn. Mrs. Plansky has been scammed! After a middle of the night phone call ( supposedly from her grandson) she awakes to find that all her money is gone! Not one to take things lying down , she embarks on a journey to recover what is rightfully hers. A fun, fast story with quirky characters! Spencer Quinn is also the author of the Chet and Bernie mysteries.
