Featuring a blurb from the GFWC MA Director of Junior Clubs ~ Beth McKeon:
I became a member of GFWC in December of 2012. Of course I had felt like a member long before that, as I grew up with GFWC MA through my mom who had been a member since the mid 1980s. I became Education chairman for GFWC MA Marlborough Junior Woman’s Club right away, and my leadership journey grew from there. I joined the state board for GFWC MA Junior Membership in 2016 for Martha Casassa’s administration as Homelife chairman. It was an incredible experience and one that showed me what I was capable of accomplishing.
I was selected as the GFWC MA LEADS candidate in 2019 and attended my first National Convention in Austin Texas. It was truly humbling to meet so many amazing women from all around the country who were there to celebrate all the tremendous work done in so many communities.
One of my favorite projects from GFWC MJWC is our Teacher Appreciation letter writing contest. The club puts out a challenge to students in Marlborough and Hudson to write a letter of appreciation to a teacher that has inspired them. As Education Chairman, I was able to read all of the heartfelt letters from students at all grade levels. As a club, we would honor one student and their teacher from the elementary level, middle school, and high school at our Junior Business meeting.
As a teacher myself for the last seventeen years, it is heartwarming to see students recognize the role their teachers have played in their lives. And as an educator I see the impact poverty can have on a child’s education. Which is why I have chosen the organization, Planting the Seed as my Director’s project. This organization gives out fully-stuffed backpacks at the beginning of the school year in Worcester and other central Massachusetts towns to students in need. They also put on massive toy drives each holiday season to help bring joy to children who may not otherwise receive any presents. Helping kids reach their true potential is something I have always been passionate about, and being able to help through my new role as Director of GFWC MA Junior Membership is an honor.

The General Federation of Women’s Clubs has a long history of supporting the suffrage movement, the passage of the 19th Amendment, the celebration of women’s history, and the National Parks System. GFWC Resolution 140-050 Citizenship Rights and Privileges calls upon members to promote voting and to uphold the freedoms afforded to citizens under the Constitution and its Amendments. The location of the federal monument honoring the suffrage movement and passage of the 19th Amendment on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., serves as a physical reminder of the hard-fought battle by our members and women across the country to secure the right to vote and encourages women to exercise this important right. Dear fellow Hanoverians:
Hanover Woman's Club, Juniors will once again sponsor their annual Halloween Parade. Children and parents have enjoyed this annual event for over 40 years. Children of all ages are encouraged to dress in their scariest, sweetest or most imaginative costume they might conjure up. The event will be held on Sunday, October 29 with check in beginning at 11:15 a.m. and the parade starting at 11:30 a.m. The parade will be held at Hanover High School.
The participants will march around the outdoors of the high school led by the Hanover High School band also decked out in costume. In case of rain, the event will be moved indoors. Following the parade, parents and children will move indoors to enjoy a medley of tunes performed by the band. Entertainment will follow with the children being taught a dance for Halloween followed by a sing along. In the spirit of Halloween, the children will be able to trick or treat table to table at the end of the event. Treat bags will be supplied by the club. Parents/adult must remain with their children during the event.
Cost for the event is $5.00 per child and may be paid on entering by cash, check or Venmo. No preregistration is needed.
Attendees are asked to bring a non-perishable food item per child for donation to the Hanover Food Pantry.

Hanover Woman's Club, Juniors is open to new members. Hanover Woman's Club, Juniors (HWCJ), a local volunteer organization, is part of the International General Federation of Women's Clubs (GFWC) of which there are 60,000 members worldwide. Formed in 1890 in New York, the organization is dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. As a local club, the HWCJ lives up to the motto "Living the Volunteer Spirit". The local club of HWCJ was founded in 1970 by a group of Hanover residents interested in giving their time, effort and resources to some of the needs of the town.
Since its inception 53 years ago, the club has sponsored many projects including having the bus arms installed on all school buses in Hanover as one of their first projects. Each year a Halloween Parade and Breakfast with Santa are held for the children in the town. Candidates' Night is held in the spring prior to town elections and a Library Tea is held in April for the library volunteers. Scholarships are awarded to deserving seniors at the end of the school year. Other projects have included the building of the bandstand and some funding for the rebuild of the new one several years later. In 1991 the club was part of the formation of the Hanover Food Pantry and continues to this day with volunteer service to the pantry. The club's fundraisers give back to worthy organizations in the community. Members enjoy new friendships, club dinners and luncheons, an annual auction and programs and crafts at club meetings.
HWCJ would love to have you as a member. Despite its name as Juniors, the club member's ages range from the 40's to their oldest charter member at 96.
