We are seeking to complete our funding goal for a much needed resource here in northern Michigan. Raptors and other large birds are regularly found with injuries from collisions with vehicles or are subjected to lead poisoning from consuming the remains of an animal that was shot with lead ammunition. This facility and the few others like it provide the necessary space and resources to allow these very important relatives an opportunity to recover and hopefully be released back into the wild. We are asking for your help to achieve our funding goal and/or spread the word of our proposed project and its needs. Please share and donate, if possible.

Happy Earth Day! In case you missed it this past Saturday, we hosted an event to replant the stormwater basin at Victories Square with red osier dogwood. With help from the Youth Services Department, we were cut and planted over 325 stakes of red osier dogwood to help stabilize and reduce erosion of the banks, create additional harvest opportunities, and treat stormwater from the development.
Work like this is important to help protect and restore water quality in our streams and lakes for the next seven generations!
Join us Saturday, April 20th to help plant the recently renovated stormwater basin at Victories Square!
The Environmental Services Program has been working to incorporate various green stormwater infrastructure practices, such as permeable pavers, catch basin filters, and bioretention areas, at Victories Squares since 2019. The focus of this work is to reduce pollution of the Bear River and Little Traverse Bay from the overall increase in development within the watershed.
At the planting, we will use a technique called “live staking,” which uses dormant woody cuttings of a shrub or tree to sprout a new plant. We’ll also take time to talk about sustainable harvest of Miskwaabimizh and other green infrastructure practices at Victories Square!
