Our Executive Director, Phyllis Hicks, donned her "Donate Life" button, which caught the eye of one of the restaurant's owners. This sparked a heartfelt conversation as we learned that the owner had donated a kidney to her sister-in-law 21 years ago, right at Harrisburg Hospital. 🏥💚
What’s more, the sister-in-law joined us, sharing her journey and the phenomenal news that the kidney is still functioning wonderfully after all these years. This conversation not only warmed our hearts but also highlighted the profound impact of organ donation.
Today reminded us of the incredible stories that unite us, the strength of human compassion, and the miraculous ways we can support one another. We’re so grateful for these moments that add depth and meaning to our lives. Here’s to more life, more love, and more stories that inspire us all! 💖
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Program Coordinator at The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania Advocates for Organ Donors at House Finance Committee Hearing
Harrisburg, Pennsylvania – April 10, 2024
Today, Lynne Wright, Program Coordinator at The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania (KFCP), delivered a powerful statement of testimony in support of House Bill 2179, sponsored by PA Representative Steve Samuelson, at the House Finance Committee public hearing in Harrisburg. The bill proposes a PIT deduction for unreimbursed expenses related to organ donation, aiming to alleviate the financial burden on organ donors.
Lynne Wright, a kidney donor herself who is deeply involved in the cause of organ donation, passionately advocated for the passage of House Bill 2179. Drawing from her own experiences and insights gained from working closely with organ donors and recipients, Wright emphasized the importance of recognizing and supporting the selfless act of organ donation.
During the hearing, a follow-up question was posed by the GOP chair regarding concerns about the possibility of individuals being paid for organs. In response, The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania reassured the representative that such payments are illegal and emphasized their commitment to upholding ethical standards in organ donation practices.
Wright's testimony resonated with committee members, highlighting the significant impact that House Bill 2179 could have on encouraging more individuals to consider organ donation by providing financial support for donors' unreimbursed expenses.
"We are deeply grateful to Lynne Wright for her compelling testimony in support of House Bill 2179," said Phyllis Hicks, Executive Director at The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania. "Her dedication to the cause of organ donation and her advocacy for the well-being of donors exemplify the values we hold dear at KFCP."
House Bill 2179 represents a crucial step forward in recognizing the contributions of organ donors and ensuring their financial well-being throughout the donation process. The Kidney Foundation of Central Pennsylvania remains committed to supporting efforts that promote organ donation and improve the lives of donors and recipients alike.
