Geisinger Medical Center Emergency Medicine Residency began in 1976 and they are the 11th oldest continually active program in the country. GMC is a three-year (PGY1-3) program at two different sites which include a high-volume academic and efficient community hospital. They are a level 1 trauma center, a comprehensive tertiary care center that acts as both a stroke and STEMI center, level 2 pediatric trauma center, and a small rural emergency department. Residents play a hands-on role in managing their patients.

What does this resident program offer that is not always available anywhere else?
- Serving as a trauma resuscitation leader
- Longitudinal pediatric exposure
- Longitudinal critical care experience with LifeFlight ground and acting as a Flight Physician with our LifeFlight Helicopter Crew
- Large academic center with a hometown feel
- Toxicology and Burn rotation
- Quarterly resident retreats
- Teaching-Resident Shifts with the Medical Students

At Geisinger Medical Center, the Emergency Medicine Wellness Committee is committed to supporting the professional, physical, emotional, and environmental wellness of their residents. Over the past year, they recognized the importance of peer mentorship and launched the “Big-Little” Program. This initiative pairs upper-level residents with new interns to help ease their transition from medical school to residency.

🤝 Why Peer Mentorship?

✅Boosts socialization and reduces burnout
✅Provides a safe space for addressing workplace challenges
✅Helps interns navigate their new environment and roles
✅Develops leadership skills for upper-level residents

Their residents have embraced this program, finding it a valuable support system that fosters connection and camaraderie.🌟

This month's introduces you to our Vice President, Blake Bailey, DO, MBA, FACEP. Read on to learn how he became involved with PACEP and get to know a little bit more about him.

"I initially got involved with PACEP slowly as a way to help out with the yearly Scientific Assembly. Since then, I have enjoyed my time with PACEP more than I ever could have expected. I stay involved because I really enjoy the people in PACEP, advocating on the state and national level, and feeling that I have a voice in the issues facing Emergency Medicine.

By getting involved in PACEP you will get far more than you expect. Try joining one of the PACEP committees, attending a committee meeting, or come to Scientific Assembly next year. I think most EM physicians will find it can help them in some way, whether reducing burnout, connecting with colleagues for ideas about education or administration, or simply a place to give a voice to the issues affecting you and your ED."

Dr. Bailey completed his residency at Lehigh Valley Health Network. He has worked at Reading Hospital, Tower Health ever since and is the Vice Chair of Emergency Medicine. Dr. Bailey stays very busy with his three daughters and spends his free time with his wife, running, and hiking.

The Pennsylvania General Assembly overwhelmingly enacted landmark legislation to restrict healthcare noncompete agreements to one year. Now Act 74 of 2024, the legislation was signed into law by Governor Josh Shapiro on July 17, 2024. Among the statute’s provisions, employers are required to notify physicians’ patients how they can transfer care to their preferred healthcare providers. In addition, employers may recover physician recruitment and practice costs.

The new law takes effect on January 1, 2025. PACEP thanks House Health Committee Chair Rep. Dan Frankel and Rep. Arvind Venkat for their diligence in protecting physicians’ rights.

This month's introduces you to our Immediate Past President, Richard J. Hamilton, MD, MBA, FACEP. Read on to learn how he became involved with PACEP and get to know a little bit more about him.

"I have always worked in underserved communities—from Jacobi for Residency and NYU Bellevue for Tox Fellowship, to MCP, Hahnemann, St. Chris, and now Crozer in Chester, PA. I believe that EM physicians’ skills are vital in these communities, and the specialty plays a crucial role as the healthcare safety net. Our services are greatly needed, and it is truly satisfying to fulfill that role. I especially love teaching the next generation of EM physicians and Toxicologists.

Nevertheless, I felt the need to get involved at the EM organizational level, which led me to become very active in PACEP about 10 years ago. There’s only so much you can do at the bedside before you realize the importance of working through our organizations to share knowledge, advocate for our patients, and enact change at the regional and national levels. It’s been such a rewarding experience to contribute and be part of the PACEP team!

One of my favorite activities in my free time is training for races—triathlons and rowing regattas. You forget all your problems at work when you are racing! Every once in a while, I get lucky when the really fast athletes don’t show up, and I end up on the podium. It’s a blast. Otherwise, my wife Beth and I are active in our parish church and spend as much time as we can with our four children and their spouses, as well as relaxing at the Jersey Shore!"

This holiday weekend make sure to stay safe if you're planning on enjoying some water fun with the family. Keep these facts in mind and practice safe water fun:

Facts:
- According to the CDC, drowning is the single leading cause of death for children ages 1-4. No other single cause of death kills more toddlers and young children than drowning.
- Drowning is the second leading cause of unintentional injury death in children ages 5-14 following motor vehicle crashes. This age group sees high disparities in drowning rates among African American and Black children.
- The drowning rate for males at age 15 nearly tripes. Drowning is the third leading cause of injury death for ages 15-24.
- Children ages 1-4 are more likely to drown in pools or other water bodies near home or location, such as a canal, retention pond, lake, river, or other water body.
- Even good swimmers can drown. It can happen when you least expect it, and it may not happen as you expect based on TV and movies.
