𝙁𝙖𝙨𝙩 𝙁𝙤𝙪𝙧 𝙬𝙞𝙩𝙝: 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱

At the age of 4, Aaron Vorpahl had a lot of energy that he didn’t know what to do with. His dad, Ron, sought out a taekwondo studio in West Bend as a way for Aaron to channel that energy. Ron soon noticed that in addition to learning how to hit and kick, Aaron also was becoming more disciplined and responsible. A year or two after Aaron started taekwondo, Ron joined him. The two of them earned their first-degree black belts together, with Aaron being one of Wisconsin’s first 8-year-olds to earn a taekwondo black belt.

Father and son continued growing in their martial arts knowledge, with Ron becoming a certified instructor and opening a school in Germantown. In the early 90s, Ron took over an existing taekwondo school in Hartford. Aaron became a certified instructor in 2002 and has personally trained more than a dozen AAU taekwondo champions.

The mission of American Taekwondo Hartford is not only to teach students Olympic-style taekwondo sparring, but also how to become a better person through honor, excellence and respect. The school focuses on physical and mental balance while building students’ self-confidence.

“Inside of hitting and kicking, the kids are learning hidden things like listening, maintaining their body position, saying ‘yes sir,’ and the consequences that come when they don’t follow these directions,” said Aaron. “We have an amazing time, but we also have a very matter-of-fact teaching style. This is a place of discipline, and the kids will be held accountable.”

In 2023, Aaron took over the Hartford studio when his dad retired. American Taekwondo Hartford currently has three master instructors who teach classes for kids as young as 3 years old up to adults. Even though he’s technically retired, Ron continues to teach autistic kids out of the Hartford school.

For Aaron, the most important thing he wants to impart to his students is how to be a good human.

“Anyone can be a black belt. I can teach someone that in three years,” said Aaron. “But we want you to be a black belt all the way around; someone who cares about others and is helpful.”

American Taekwondo Hartford offers two free introductory lessons so you can learn the basics of being in class. Anyone can join anytime – there are no contracts and people can come and go as they wish.

We caught up with Aaron to ask 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗙𝗮𝘀𝘁 𝗤𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 about 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱.

𝟭. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱?
𝗔𝗩: Hartford has been really different from the other taekwondo schools I’ve had in Brookfield and Fredonia. The families have such good core values. They’re regular people who want good things for their kids, like understanding right from wrong and being strong-minded. And, the community is awesome about supporting “anything Hartford.”

𝟮. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗮 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝗿𝗲𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀?
𝗔𝗩: We’re very committed to the students. I want to know how their day at school was and what’s going on in their day-to-day lives. For me to be a good teacher and happy with what I’m doing, I need to care about each student individually. It’s hard to find a teacher who does that. I also have a very distinct way of teaching. I try to be as fun as I can without it being a joke. Kids need to laugh and smile. It’s not a bootcamp.

𝟯. 𝗪𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗲𝗼𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗔𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗧𝗮𝗲𝗸𝘄𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗼 𝗛𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱?
𝗔𝗩: If you stick with martial arts for a long time, you will find your best friends — those people who you work hard with, sweat with and get your butt kicked by. The people I connect with the most are people I’ve done martial arts with. You’ll find your people. It’s a crazy bond.

𝟰. 𝗗𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗵𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀?
𝗔𝗩: Our school has historically pumped out national champions. HUHS graduate, Sheldon Wilcox, is currently working his way to the 2028 Olympics. We got him to the point where he could move on to a bigger school and fight against the best in the world. He just won at World’s and is on the USA National Team.
