We typically think of stroke as something that happens to older people. However, every year, about 70,000 Americans under age 45 have strokes. About 10%-15% of strokes occur in children and adults under age 45, and that number is rising.

Talking to a loved one about getting help can be hard, but it can make a big difference. Listen without judgment and speak with kindness. Remember that it takes a lot of strength for someone to open up about the challenges they face. It may take many conversations before they get help.
🫂Ask open ended questions
Open-ended questions mean that the person has to reply with more than a “yes” or “no.” Usually, open-ended questions start with how, what, or where.
🫂Be supportive
During your conversation, comment on their strengths. It can be easy to tell them all the things they’re doing wrong, but it can close them off to asking for help. Thank them for being willing to speak with you.
🫂Show you're listening
Listen carefully to what they’re saying. When it’s your turn to talk, repeat back what you heard them say. This helps them to feel understood and corrects any misunderstandings. You can do this by saying, “I heard you say____.
🫂Bring it all together
These conversations can be about many different feelings and plans. At the end of your talk, give a summary of what you heard them say and any actions they want to take. If they want to get help, ask how you can support them. Also ask if you can follow up with them to check in.
If you or someone you know is struggling or in crisis, help is available.

Some context that seems to be missing from the conversation…77% of the increase to the Public Benefit portion of your electric bill is because of a Republican led bailout of Millstone Nuclear Power Plant. 👀
Don’t forget - in 2017, Connecticut Republicans led a deal in the House and Senate to preserve the Millstone Nuclear Power Plant, which included a requirement to buy power from Millstone each year at a rate about 2.5 times the cost of electricity generated by natural gas-fired plants.

Today we joined with Office of Governor Ned Lamont , Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection , Food Association, and Connecticut State Police to discuss the steps to protect EBT, credit and debit card information from criminals who are using skimming devices to steal the information. “We have been using social media, text messaging, and community meetings to get the word out, but the criminals are working just as hard.," DSS Commissioner Andrea Barton Reeves said. "The Department of Social Services takes fraud prevention seriously and works diligently to ensure the benefits reach those who qualify. We have made dent, and the number of stolen benefits has leveled off, including a 48% drop in stolen benefits from the first week of June to the first week of August.” Protect your EBT benefits, change your PIN number by calling 1-888-328-2666.
