Thank you Chef Niki and Mighty Oak Market for hosting the Indian Cooking class last night! I am so proud of our awesome team and the delicious food we made. Indian food is so flavorful, full of anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant spices. I think everyone should try adding curried chickpeas or lentils to their diet, I'm a huge fan! Luckily you can order prepared meals from Chef Niki at the market. She often does an Indian menu, and surely will if she gets enough requests😋

I believe in using the medicines that nature has provided us! We do not have to travel to distant rain forests to find exotic healing plants, most of what we need will be in our own back yards and wild areas. Thank you to Hannah at Poppysol Farm and Apothecary for helping me make my back yard even better!
I enjoyed teaching Sonoco employees breathing techniques to manage stress. It only takes a few minutes of intentional relaxation to change your whole state! Studies show that reducing your stress levels results in increased productivity, work quality, and happiness. Now who doesn't have time for that?

Most of the kids (and grown-ups) loved the kefir smoothie I made for Healthy Kids Day! It makes a great afternoon snack or can be made into popsicles for a refreshing treat. I will be teaching a "how to" class at Mighty Oak Market on May 29th.
I'm crazy about kefir because it has helped so many of my clients heal their chronic digestive issues! Kefir is similar to yogurt, but has a much greater number and diversity of probiotics to strengthen and protect your gut. Oh, and did I mention that it is satisfying, nutritious, and delicious? Sign up for my class and see for yourself!

The hike last Sunday was gorgeous with the Kalmia in bloom, but I'm afraid the heavy rain this week may have washed out the blossoms. Regardless, Kalmia Gardens is always a peaceful place to walk and relax in nature!
Stop by Burry Park this Saturday morning to say hi and try one of my kid-friendly smoothies! If your kids are participating in Healthy Kids Day with the YMCA they can get their passport books stamped at my booth. There will be lots of fun activities for families at this free event!

We had a fantastic reunion weekend with other naturopathic doctors in the Carolinas at the lovely Mt Mitchell Eco Retreat. It's always great to spend time and exchange ideas and insights with our people. We went on a medicinal plant walk, played in the river, and ate a lot of great food!
Being in the midst of the wonders of nature makes me happy! Crimson clover is a beautiful cover crop that helps restore nitrogen to the soil. In nature, everything has a cycle and a purpose. We too are part of this great design as stewards of the Earth. Nature holds the keys to healing, we just need to tune in and follow her wisdom!
It was a fabulous day for planting, cool and misty. I got my tomatoes, eggplant, squash, and peppers in the ground and will be looking forward to making ratatouille this summer. Nothing like fresh home-grown veggies!

This wonderful group of retired teachers invited me to have lunch with them so they could learn more about holistic health and wellness. We got off on quite a few tangents, like kid's menus and antibiotic resistance, but my main message was that better health outcomes are achieved when you have someone on your healthcare team that focuses on you as a whole person! I love taking the time to really understand each client's unique patterns and challenges, so that I can offer gentle support that will improve their quality of life and foundational level of health. Your body wants to be healthy!

I love this time of year where we gather with friends and family from afar! However it is all too easy to get caught up in the rush, to-do lists, and expectations for the "perfect" holiday. If you find yourself getting stressed about all the things this week, take a moment to feel grateful for what you have and remember to be fully present for those you love.

Our Story
As I was pulling the trailer down to South Carolina to start our new life in Hartsville, I knew I would miss the friends we had made and the practice we had built during our 11 years in Brevard, North Carolina. But already I was missing the mountains! Driving along the monotonous highway, I started musing over what to call my new practice when the name Kalmia Wellness popped into my head.
Kalmia latifolia is the botanical name for mountain laurel, a beautiful shrub which is abundant in the mountains of Western North Carolina. It is normally not found in the flat lands (as the name implies), but at Kalmia Gardens in Hartsville there is a steep north-facing bluff where the mountain laurel thrives. I had always enjoyed wandering through Kalmia Gardens during previous visits to my husband’s home town. Now this lovely and peaceful oasis is my little piece of the mountains right here in Hartsville!
At Kalmia Wellness we use nature as our guide. Studies show that spending time in nature, whether hiking on mountain trails or sitting on the porch listening to the birds, reduces stress. We can also access the healing power of nature through the food we choose and the plant medicines we find all around us. The common dandelion that persistently shows up in our lawns contains valuable compounds that help detoxify the body!
My goal is to empower you to achieve your health goals. Taking the time to listen to you and your story is a very important part of the process. There is more to your health than the sum of your symptoms. Education is always a big part of what I do, helping you determine what is and isn’t working and implementing a doable plan to make healthy lifestyle changes. Real food nutrition is the gas that powers your engine, while custom herbal formulas, targeted nutrients, and specific homeopathic remedies further open the doors to deep healing. Welcome to the journey!
