Happy birthday to a Well Born Baby Boy born Tuesday! Mama’s water broke and contractions kicked off around 2:30am. By 9am things were picking up in intensity and she arrived at the birth center 4cm dilated. The tub was the perfect choice and soon after mom was 9.5cm! She did a great job listening to and trusting her body. Her partner was along her side the entire time and they made a fabulous team! Shortly mom felt the urge to push and was so strong! Baby boy arrived earthside after about an hour of pushing and snuggled in with mama! Breastfeeding went smoothly from there and mom, dad, and baby boy all snuggled into bed and enjoyed some snacks. Congratulations to this new family and thanks to our wonderful midwife (and mama’s friend) Sarah for supporting and encouraging her on this journey!

Happy birth to a Well Born Baby Boy born Monday!! He’s our first September baby to arrive…a little early of course, but all is well! Baby boy was persistently breech. Low fluid levels were the indicator it was time! All went smoothly and baby arrived through a belly birth. Mama did@great and dad got to enjoy some skin to skin. Baby was a fabulous nurser as well! Congratulations to this new family on welcoming their son and thanks to all the nurses and doctors for their support at Lankenau L&D

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Boy born this Thursday morning!! Mama went in yesterday as her contractions picked up and had been coming since around midnight Wednesday. She stayed at 3cm after a couple hours and decided to get an epidural and some rest…she’s had little sleep beforehand and lots of labor work ahead. Unfortunately baby showed signs they weren’t tolerating labor well, and a cesarean birth was agreed upon this morning. Sometimes they don’t know why a baby doesn’t tolerate contractions and other times it’s very obvious. This little one definitely had some cord entanglement that was preventing them from coming down and causing compression with contractions. Both mama and baby did great though and he’s a wonderful nurser!! Congratulations to this new family on their first baby and thanks to all their nurses and doctors at Pennsylvania Hospital!

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl born Tuesday!! Mama was early and started noticing her body getting ready for labor. Contractions lasted for over a day so she decided to get checked out. She still had a while to go and needed some rest after being up for over 24 hours! Getting an epidural allowed her to sleep and by mid morning she was almost complete! A couple different positions to help encourage things and it was time to push! Mama pushed great and worked with gravity and her pelvis. Soon she met her baby girl who was adorable! Congratulations to this family on their first baby and thanks to all the wonderful nurses and doctors at HUP!

Happy Birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl born Wednesday morning! Mama worked hard through prodromal labor contractions since Sunday. By Tuesday she had had enough! Her epidural helped her relax and rest and by Wednesday she was complete and ready to push. Baby girl was a little surprised at delivery but all was well! Congratulations to this family on welcoming their baby! Dad was a great help and super supportive throughout! Thanks to all the great nurses and doctors that helped in this special birthday party at HUP!

Happy Birthday to a new Well Born Baby Boy!! Baby boy arrived on his due date and on mom and dad’s second wedding anniversary!! Wow! How cool is that? Mama had a beautiful labor and was a super strong pusher. Dad helped catch their baby!! What a wonderful anniversary gift for everyone! Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl! Mom was working for a vbac for baby #3! After a successful version earlier in the week baby was head down and ready to go! Mama opted for induction on Friday since her BP was being a little questionable. She didn’t need much to get things going! After an evening of low dose pitocin she had her water broken around 10am and baby girl arrived around 12:13pm! Congratulations to the family on their first girl and thanks to the awesome nurses, midwives, and doctors at Jefferson for supporting this couple on their successful vbac!

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby born on Tuesday via a Belly Birth!! This little one was breech and would not turn. Mama tried all the tricks but baby girl was persistent. That’s okay!! Everything went smooth and the long road to meeting her became a very quick delivery! Baby girl was adorable and nurses great!! Congratulations to this new family and thanks to all the great nurses and doctors at Lankenau!

Happy birthday to anew Well Born Baby Boy!! Mama has waited patiently for her second as her due date came and went. Frustrating as her first baby was early! She’s been walking around dilated for weeks with a low baby but no labor. Yesterday she thought her water broke, nope, but got checked out and was 5cm. She went home and later her water broke. Labor progressed quickly and she was soon complete with no epidural. She didn’t push long and met her adorable baby boy! Kiddo nurses well and everyone got to enjoy some baby cuddles! Congratulations to mom and dad on baby number 2 and thanks to the wonderful doctors and nurses supporting them last night at Lankenau!

Should I Get An Epidural? "Should I get an epidural?" is a question we get quite often. Only you can know the answer to that though! This is a very personal decision and one that is hard to make before labor begins. What do we recommend as doulas...

Swaddling your baby helps recreate the cozy conditions of the uterus helping baby to feel safe and secure. Swaddling also helps prevent babies from startling and self-waking from the Moro reflex. A swaddled baby will also stay warm and, with hands swaddled away, will be less likely to scratch themselves.

Intimidated? Don't be! Can you wrap a burrito? Roll some sushi? Then you can swaddle your baby!

Traditional swaddle blankets are large, thin blankets not to confused with smaller receiving blankets. You’ll want to find a blanket that is specifically designed for swaddling. These blankets are usually square in shape, thin and breathable. My personal favorite is Aden + Anais and measure 47" x 47".

There are many different methods for swaddling a baby...the right one is one that is of course safe, but also that works for you. Here are some basic tips to get the perfect swaddle.

First, take a blanket and place it onto a flat surface. Make sure that it's got a corner at the top, bottom, and sides.

Fold down the top corner about 1/4 of the way. You don't want the blanket folded in half, but you want the top edge down. the top part of the corner down a bit. Usually fold more for a smaller baby (need a smaller swaddle) and fold less for a bigger baby (need a bigger swaddle).

Place baby on its back near the fold at the top of the blanket. Baby's shoulders should be even with the fold or slightly below it.

Hold down the baby’s right arm and fold the left side of the blanket over the baby’s body, tucking it under it’s left arm Tuck the blanket under baby’s body; this will help keep a more secure swaddle.

Fold the bottom of the blanket up, and tuck it into fold you just created over the chest. You want the swaddle to be snug but not restrictive; baby should still be able to stretch their legs.

Place the baby’s left arm down, and take the right side of the blanket over the arm and baby’s belly. Tuck the blanket under the baby’s body and into the fold you just created if blanket is long enough.

Happy birthday to a brand new Well Born Baby Boy!! Mama had been having contractions on/off since Thursday and they started back up Saturday evening. She went into the hospital around 1am Sunday and was 6cm! Once a room@was ready and she got checked again, she was 6-7cm and asked to have her water broken. Not long after she was 8…and then had lots of pressure. The pressure was baby moving down and she was still 8cm so@she opted for an epidural. A little rest and she was soon complete and baby was nice and low! She pushed for just over 30minutes…a huge deal shorter then the 5.5hours she pushed with her first baby!! Baby boy was a good size at over 8lbs! After a little skin to skin he latched like a pro! After a little snack he also found his thumb and was totally adorable 🥰 congratulations to this couple on baby number 2! A pleasure supporting them. Thanks to our wonderful doctors and nurse at Pennsylvania Hospital Labor & Delivery!

Make that baby #4 for this week!! Happy Birthday Baby Girl!! This was mamas third baby and she and her partner w repeat clients. This labor was nothing like the first two!! With her first two, we were trying to avoid an epidural, but long labors and back pain meant we got the epidural. This time she wasn’t late; she went early. This time she was 5cm when she arrived at the hospital. This time labor was fast!! Baby girl was born just about an hour after getting to the hospital, she didn’t have back pain, and she didn’t get an epidural!! Oh…and let’s not forget to add, she ran a 10k this morning and had no expectations of being in labor! Congratulations to them on baby #3 and hanging in this time for an unmedicated birth! Great support from everyone at Lankenau Labor &Delivery today!

Twins!!! Happy Birthday to a new Well Born Baby Boy and Baby Girl!! Lovely working with this couple again as repeat clients as they prepared to welcome two babies this time around! Baby A was a Boy and Baby B a Girl! Mama carried both babies until 36 weeks. Induction was the plan and didn’t take long. Things really kicked into gear when mama was 4cm and had her water broken. About an hour later she had a ton of pressure and baby A was basically crowning before she could lay down…Baby B followed 4 minutes later feet first!! A little bit of a “fire drill” at the end but a wonderful birth at Chester County Hospital!! Congratulations to this couple on their beautiful babies and thanks to our great nurses and doctors!

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl born on Tuesday evening! Mama waited and tried all the tricks to get labor started naturally…and then to also not have a Christmas baby!! Monday evening she went in for an induction and by Tuesday morning was pretty uncomfortable. Thank goodness for wireless monitoring so she could get in the shower for a bit! She labored until 6cm without an epidural and then enjoyed a little rest. A run through a tried and tested circuit got baby to rotate from transverse and mom@soon had pressure. She didn’t push for long once complete and baby breastfed well! Congratulations to@this couple on their first baby and thanks to our great doctors and nurses at Bryn Mawr Hospital Labor & Delivery!

Happy birthday to a beautiful Well Born Baby Girl!! Mama had been having contractions for weeks and thought her water may have broken a couple times this week. On Saturday morning her water did break but labor didn’t follow. After some time, and because her cervix still had some changing to do, they agreed to starting the augmentation process. Baby always had an odd tracing pattern, even from days before, and their doctor discussed her concerns with them. Knowing this doctor favors low intervention and vaginal deliveries, when she expressed her concern everyone listened. Mom and dad made the decision to go forward with a cesarean birth to welcome their baby. Everything went smoothly and baby girl was so adorable and chubby!! Her due date was still 8 days away and she was 8lbs! Baby snuggled with mama and latched awesomely! Congratulations to this great couple in welcoming their baby last night! Wishing them lots of rest today! Thanks to her wonderful doctor, residents, and nurses at Lankenau.

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl born early this morning! Mama’s water broke and things were calm…it was her second baby. By the time she was checked at the PETU she was complete and baby was born 10minutes after getting into her room!! Labor was super fast for this second time mama but everyone is well! Congratulations to them!

Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl yesterday! Mamas water broke in the early morning hours and she was having contractions a little while afterwards. By mid morning she was 4cm dilated and then contractions really started getting intense! Hopping into the shower really helped! The urge to push came quickly and mama was soon complete! Mom@was a really strong pusher and brought baby down quickly. Even so, there was a lot of stretching that needed to be done, so pushing took a little while as mama was so close to crowning. We soon all saw why! Baby girls was such a good@size with lots of little chubby baby rolls!! Love it! Congratulations to this family on welcoming their first baby! Thanks to our wonderful docs and nurses at HUP!

Happy birthday to our second baby of the day!! Mamas water broke early Thursday morning. She went and got checked out, and since all was well, she made the decision to go home. About 24hours later she took castor oil and contractions kicked in and she went into the hospital. A well timed epidural at 6cm and a little pitocin to help things along and she was soon feeling lots of pressure. She was a great pusher and soon had her baby in Her arms!! Mom@amd@dad@finally got to meet their baby and learn she was a girl! Congratulations to this couple and a huge thank you to their wonderful nurses and midwives at Pennsy!

We’ve two babies today! Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Boy at Bryn Mawr Hospital L&D! Mama almost had her baby on her due date…seemed very likely, but progress slowed around 5-6cm. Wasn’t until the next day that baby was confirmed to@be sunny side up. All the tricks that usually work did not, but we got to complete and started pushing. Baby still did not turn! After over two hours of pushing a little assistance was called in. Mama was so strong and with a little instrumental assist, baby was delivered full sunny side up vaginally! Whew!! Everyone was well…and baby got to snuggle with his mama! Wishing this couple an evenings of well deserved rest!! Thanks to a wonderful nursing crew and doctors!

Happy day before Thanksgiving birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl!! This was mamas third baby and everything seemed on track for another straightforward vaginal delivery. No one has a crystal ball though! At 38weeks baby girl was head down. At 39 she had turned breech! Mama scheduled the version two after finding out and everyone expected baby would turn. Um. Everyone was wrong! Baby girl had a mind of her own and was wedged in moms ribs. Mom and Dad were comfortable moving ahead with a cesarean birth and met their new daughter last night. Congratulations to this lovely family on welcoming baby number 3!!

Two Girls, one day!!! This last birth (hopefully) completes this week@of raining babies!! Happy birthday to a new Well Born Baby Girl!! While this@mornings mama chose an epidural because of her experience going natural with her first, tonight’s mama elected to not have an epidural after having one with her first (both excellent choices for their own reasons btw!!). Mama waited patiently for labor to start. An induction was needed because of a medical reason a little before her December due date. Once mamas water broke labor really took off! Listening to her body she birthed her baby on her hands and knees without the need for pain meds. She did beautifully!! Baby girl while early was a good size, nice and pink, and let us all know she was here! She latched like a champ and snuggled right in with her mama. Can’t wait to see the pictures of when she meets her big sister! A fast and beautiful delivery with .obgyn
