When restoring furniture we often find interesting pieces of history. This week we picked up a french Secretaire a Abattant built in the 1800’s with a letter and perhaps a loan document from 1858.

Before modern glass the wavy glass in your windows was “cylinder” glass like in this 1918 picture.

The glass was blown out thru machines into these cylinders and then the cylinders would be laid down on a table, scored on one side and heated again so they would slowly lay down flat into a sheet of glass that could be cut into the pieces we have in our historic windows.

For me, knowing the story behind the things that surround us every day makes those things that much more interesting.

New fabric books have arrived! What samples do you need for your next project?

Shop help needed part-time for small but busy furniture restoration shop. Various duties to include help moving furniture, cleaning, sorting, stripping. Must be able to handle various odors, and lift 40+ lbs.
Interest in the field and motivation to do work is required.
Days vary... some days (3-4 days/month)we are on the road for pickup or delivery as well as onsite touch up. Therefore presence and comfort in a clients home is necessary. Most days are in the shop taking apart furniture, regluing, stripping finish, sanding, and finishing. Organizing and straightening up work area is also needed.
Flexibility is important.
