This week is our Horseshoe Letter U 🐎

Along with four-leaf clovers, the number 7, and a rabbits foot (never really understood that one), the horseshoe is widely considered to be a good luck charm!

We certainly felt lucky when we came across this one in Santa Fe, NM because we knew this would be the perfect addition to our alphabet photo library!

So, what's the origin story behind the horseshoe and luck?

I wondered this myself and as it turns out there's a few common beliefs...

So, Early Western Europeans believed that iron had magical powers because it could drive away evil. Since horseshoes were made of iron, they kept the misbehaving fairies and other ill-tempered mystical creatures away!

In the Irish story of the blacksmith and the devil, one day a blacksmith was forging horseshoes in his shop.

Suddenly, the devil appeared and demanded his own shoes. The blacksmith, recognizing the devil, took a burning hot shoe and nailed it deep into the devil's hooves.

The devil was in such excruciating pain, that he ripped the horseshoes off and swore he would never go near one again.
Thus, the tradition of hanging a horseshoe over the entrance of a house to ward off evil spirits was born!

This week is our Shark's Tooth Letter T 🦈

So, if you have been keeping up with our letter series you will probably know that our happy place is the beach!

And one of our fave things to do there is to go shark's teeth hunting!

If you have ever tried this you will know what I mean when I say that it is soooo therapeutic!

What's not to love? The sound of the ocean waves, the sun on your back, and a cooling coastal breeze.

This sets the calming scene as your eyes cast along the shore and scan for the particular shape and color of the shark's teeth amongst the shells!

Ten million years ago, when Florida was submerged underwater, the area was teeming with sharks.

Over time, as the water receded giving way to land, the prehistoric sharks died - their skeletons disintegrated, but their fossilized teeth remained.

The Venice coastal area, just south of Sarasota, sits on top of a fossil layer that runs 18-35 feet deep.

With storms and waves, the fossils are slowly driven into the shallow waters and then up onto the beach.

We recommend fossiling in Florida for a fun and somewhat meditative experience at the beach!

This is our Iron Gate Letter S 💙

This letter S was taken in the small town of Mesilla, NM.

We love the textures in this shot, and of course the vibrant shade of turquoise blue in the background on the door.

Turquoise is seemingly everywhere in New Mexico (seen in art, textiles, jewelry, architectural features, and pottery).

It has been mined in that area since 200 B.C (yes, mind blown), and is widely considered to be many people's happiest natural stone! The colors always prompt me to think of the turquoise ocean or a clear blue sky, so I can see that!

Located in Southern New Mexico, in the Mesilla valley on the banks of the Rio Grande is the cute town of Mesilla.

Rich in history and local flair, folks from all parts of the world go there to experience the architecture, art, quaint shopping, and unique dining that Mesilla has to offer.

And of course this happens to be the town where the outlaw Billy the Kid was jailed and tried in 1881.

As the legend goes he was sentenced to hang and taken back to the courthouse in Lincoln where he escaped.

This old courthouse building (a Billy the Kid gift shop these days) can be found on the corner of the plaza.

This is our Reynolds Iron Letter R.

R's are super difficult to find! So, when you see one like this you really have to add it to your alphabet photo collection!

It is still our go-to letter R when putting together our alphabet designs.

This letter is one of the first that we found when trying to collect the entire alphabet.

It is an actual letter R, as part of a wrought iron gate which can be found in Reynolda Village, Winston-Salem, NC.

Reynolda Village is part of the Reynolds estate, as in R.J Reynolds to***co company! (established 1875).

After a year of marriage, R.J's wife, Katharine began purchasing land in that area and over the course of 13 years she made 27 land aquisitions which became the Reynolda estate.

Today you can visit the village which was once home to the Reynolds family. It boasts a museum of American Art, the gardens, and many shops and restaurants.
