ITS 'FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!
It's an extra special one too! It's John and my 32nd wedding anniversary! The majority of our married life has been dedicated to rescuing animals and tending to ITCOW'S permanent residents. Not gonna lie, it's been an uphill battle most of the way. We have been each others rock when one of us was frustrated or discouraged. We are proud of what we built together. It's amazing what just two people can do when they refuse to give up. Together we have literally saved hundreds of lives whether it was taking in an injured or orphaned wild one and giving it a chance at freedom or giving it a peaceful release from suffering if it came too injured or sick to fix. We have given countless shelter dogs facing euthanasia a second chance at new lease on life. Many, many aged equines found their forever home at ITCOW over the years too...and we cannot forget the plethora wild animals that have called ITCOW home as permanent residents over the years.
Today, as with many other past anniversaries, we will be cleaning enclosures, doing maintenance, picking up meat, produce, hay and other supplies for the week for the critters. Nothing would make us happier than to have this $5.00 Friday a prosperous one for ITCOW. Each and every donation received means a less stressful week ahead. If you can help, our donation links are below! We have chosen to post a photo dump of past pictures for today. We hope you enjoy them. It brought us joy going through them.

Well here it is almost 10:00 pm and we just realized it's Thursday already and we haven't thanked our last week's donors yet. ( hangs head in shame) It was busy and productive week though and even though the heat's back, we have been motivated. Nevertheless, we want to show our appreciation.

It's FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!!!
It seems when the animals do the most adorable things, or pulling the most silly antics, our cameras are never ready! It's not always easy catching the right photo or coming up with something clever to post each Friday. In fact, this week, we got nothing! Lol.
The fact remains the same though, ...animals gotta eat, and still need all the care that goes along with keeping them physically and mentally happy. It's ALOT of hard work everyday and nobody gets paid. It's a labor of love for sure and your donations go straight to the care of the animals. Funds have been extra tight because of the usage of the misters 💦 keeping the animals cool during the crazy heat waves this summer, but it was necessary. We believe it's been one of the hottest summers with the longest stretch of heat waves in a long time.
So much of the funding this past year came out of pocket. We can use all the help we can get.
So this week, if you still can find it in your heart to help out a critter, our donation links are below.

It's FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!
We're hoping it's a good one too! In addition to the everyday essentials to keep the animals fed and happy, our water 💦 bill was sky high! 🫣We knew it was going to be a whopper. The horses are on automatic waters to ensure fresh water and save on wasting since there are no barrels to dump and fill. It's just a push of the muzzle and new water every time! Unfortunately, saving water can't be the case when it comes to keeping our animals cool during that insane heatwave we had. The misters are essential for their comfort as well as the pool for Sammy and Woody. Our water bill for them was over $400 this last billing period! 😳😭
This is going to really eat into an already shoestring budget and summer is not over yet! The misters drop the temperature in the enclosures by about 15 to 20 degrees. The pools help the bears stay cool during the hottest of heat waves. They are essential!
As usual, later today we will be going out again getting supplies for the critters. Your donation truly helps us stretch our tight budget. We appreciate any support we can get. Our donation links are below.

As a small sanctuary, we have witnessed the generosity of our village during the toughest of times. Please know that it doesn't go unnoticed. We appreciate you more than you know. Just a few more weeks until the "ber" months ( September, October, November, December) come and we'll have a cool down! WE CAN'T WAIT!! We hope you'll all have a great weekend and thank you for supporting ITCOW 's critters! Do your best to stay cool, and don't forget to Pause for Paws!

So Cal bears facts, brought to you today by your favorite bears, Sammy and Woody!
Did you know that in 1933, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife trucked 28 black bears from Yosemite National Park to the Santa Ana River Canyon in Southern California? The bears were released near Seven Oaks, about 6 miles south of Big Bear Lake, on November 15, 1933. The introduction was successful, and the bears' descendants are now a common sight in the suburbs of Southern California.
Sammy was found as an injured orphan cub in the West fork of Azusa canyon. Woody was found as an orphaned injured cub in the hills of Arcadia.
It's that kind of day. The little cool down made it perfect for a mid day nap!
It's FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!
Once again we will be making the rounds picking up supplies for the critters. Every dollar we receive helps us offset the rising cost of caring for them. We thank our donors each week because we realize the importance of their contributions and we appreciate our donors so much!

IT'S FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!
( on a Saturday!?!) 😳😱🫣
Yesterday had us a bit preoccupied. So much so that we forgot to do our $5.00 Friday! We depend on those to help offset the costs of caring for the animals at ITCOW.
Back in September of 2021 there was a senior dog that has been at the shelter for quite some time. Her people never came for her and there was zero adoption or rescue interest in her. Time was running out so we did what we could and pulled her to safety. She had some medical issues. She needed a dental and she was very sight impaired. Thankfully she was already spayed.
Once we had her and discovered her beautiful personality we thought surley someone would want to offer her a home where she could live out her golden years. Just as her luck was before....there was no one for her. We had inquiries but everyone decided she was too old and ended up passing on her. 😥
Once we pull a dog, we back them for life. They are our responsibility. If they get adopted and the adopter can no longer care for them, they always have a place to come back to. If they don't get adopted, we remain their family. They will never go back to the life of betrayal as they had known before.
Yesterday, sadly, we had to say goodbye to Hershey and help send her on her new journey to wait for us at the Bridge . We know she will be waiting for us there when it's our turn and once again she will know she is loved as we cross over together.
Our $5.00 Friday on Saturday will be used to cover her final vet bill. Our donation links are below if you can help.

Hugs your fur kids tight! Time flies by and when they leave, it leaves a big gap in your life. It doesn't matter how long you had them or if you personally picked them out to join your family or it just came to be that way. All their lives mattered. We can only hope that they knew how much we cherished them.
Have a good weekend folks. Enjoy the nice days and be good people.

It's FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY!
It took us a long time to gain the trust of many of ITCOW 's permanent residents. Most came to us not trusting new faces and they were uncertain about their future. It takes lots of patience to build up trust, but just look at what love can do. We are a no buy, no breed, no sell, no trade sanctuary. All donations go to the care of the animals.
Every animal here has our full commitment to care for them for the remainder of their lives. Your donations help make our promises to them a little less burdening. If you can help with a donation, regardless of size , we would be grateful. Our donation links are below.

Adding more misters today!
Starting a sanctuary so many years ago was my idea. I stole a surfer from Huntington Beach and landlocked him up in the desert and together we created ITCOW. I can't help feeling so blessed at his dedication to the animals.
It's almost a 100° outside (and climbing ,🥵) and his priority is the comfort of the animals over his own. Gotta love him! Not bad for 71 years old!
Happy 4th anniversary of your "gotcha day" Rio!
Thank you to the Foster family! 😘😘😘😘
It's FIVE DOLLAR FRIDAY! Along with heat today, we'll also have humidity too! Yikes!! 🥵
We'll be headed to do the usual rounds today. The grocery store for meats and produce for our carnivores and omnivores. Feed store for our equine rescues and good old Walmart and Tractor Supply for our domestic rescues. It always seem we need something at the hardware store to either repair something or create something. Fridays are always busy for us.
A small donation will go a long way in showing a "wild child" some love! Your generosity helps us offset the rising costs of keeping the critters happy and healthy. Our donation links are below if you'd like to help us out. We so appreciate your support. 😘

Funds have been extremely tight and are about to get tighter, but the comfort of our animals here at ITCOW is of great importance. We dug a little deeper in to our own pocket and bought a bit more materials to expand our mister systems to keep our critters as comfortable as possible during this killer heat. The red fox enclosure and the young coyotes enclosure will be getting an upgrade. 🥰😎💦
Just starting to fill the basket! 😊

Chica is no dummy. She found her favorite spot to be on a hot day. In the shade right under a mister nozzle!
This post was stolen from a wonderful rehab friends page. Sammy and Woody thought you'd find it interesting.
This is an article from Bearwise.org for July, thought it was very enlightening and thought it was worth sharing:
What are bears doing in the month of July:
How to Tell the Difference Between a Cub and a Yearling
Yearling bears are about 18 months old in July and out on their own for the first time. Sometimes people mistake these young bears for abandoned cubs and think they need help. In July, cubs-of-the-year are about the size of a raccoon or a small dog; yearlings are usually quite a bit bigger, closer to medium-sized dogs.
Cubs born this year are usually still with their moms; if they are left alone, they may cry and whimper. Yearlings seldom vocalize, but they do roam around looking for a home range of their own. Female yearlings are often allowed to share their mom’s home range, but males are forced to move out. It may be several years before male yearlings find a permanent home of their own.
Cubs Follow in Mom’s Footsteps
Cubs are big enough now to follow mom as she goes foraging for food. If mom is a wild bear, she teaches them what’s good to eat and how to find and eat specific foods. She shows the youngsters how to eat berries, catch fish and dig for insects. She even lets them smell her breath, so they learn to associate certain smells with foods. Yum, termites!
Not All Lessons Are Good Ones
If mom has learned to rely on human-provided food sources, one whiff of mom’s breath will teach the cubs to associate the smells of human food and garbage, pet food, bird seed and more with a full tummy and easy meals. Instead of learning how to forage in the wild, they learn how to raid dumpsters and garbage cans, knock down bird feeders, empty pet food bowls and prowl through campgrounds. If they grow up, they’ll teach their own cubs this same behavior.
How Bears Find Food
Bears have more than a hundred times as many smell receptors in their noses as people do and can detect and follow scent trails a mile or more back to the source. Because bears are omnivores and much of their diet is vegetation, insects and carrion (dead animals), their sense of super-smell is vital to their survival.
Bears have a much better sense of direction than most people. Their built-in GPS guides them back year after year to wherever they found food, whether it’s the berry patch that ripens in July or the trash that goes out every Thursday night.
