Acme Antique Market

Today marks a notable milestone in American History. Actress Hattie McDaniel became the first Black person to win an Oscar for "Gone With The Wind". It was 1940 and America was segregated. The hotel where the event was held had a strict policy of no blacks. The producer of the movie called in a favor and Hattie was allowed inside the building.

Hattie was thrilled. She wore beautiful gardenias in her hair and a stunning sequined gown. Upon arrival McDaniel was escorted to a table at the back of the venue. Her white counterparts, Vivien Lee, Clark Gable, and the movie's producer David Selznick.

McDaniel did not even receive an invitation to the movie premiere in 1939. Selznick attempted to get Hattie and other Black actors invited but MGM Studios advised she would not be permitted in the host theater in Atlanta, Georgia.

McDaniel's role is one that will be forever be remembered. Selznick, a white male is an important to remember, as he was an ally and advocate for Hattie. He used his privilege to make sure that this Black woman could not only be seen as "Mammie" but be seen as as a whole person, worthy and talented rather than 3/5 of a person.

If you've not seen "Gone With The Wind," please do. If you are not a person of color, know that 85 years later, people of color still do not get invited to sit with you at the table. Selznick was a real MVP.

Shop is closed today in observance of Father's Day, in honor of my own Daddy, Alvin Eugene Harold
(June 23, 1949 - June 14, 2008.

In 2008, a day before Father's Day; my Daddy passed away from Stage IV Cancer. It all happened so quickly within a 3 week period, which included diagnosis to surgery to hospice to gone within a twinkling of an eye.

I lost my rock, my soldier, my love, my biggest critic, and my biggest fan. The loss of my Daddy is the most devastating experience that I've encountered in my life.

Only today, did I realize it had been 15 years ago as the wounds of grief open and close, as grief is cyclical. I am reminded of my loss constantly and moreso as I get older. I remember him with each success and any turmoil.

Daddy, you made me an accountable person. You made me believe in myself and know that anything I desired to do, I could. You made me love all mankind. You made me love music. You made me generous. You made me a fighter for myself and others unable to fight for themselves. You made me an entrepreneur. I take nothing off anybody. Period.

June Dealer Payouts are deferred until July. Why? Though we attempt to vet who we trade with, uncertain economic times have brought out an unhealthy helping of anxiety from sellers. This anxiety presents in daily calls, texts and visits asking whether items sold. We have grown to over 150 dealers and about 20% or more have inundated me with requests.

If you know me, you know I have a neurological disability. If you know the shop, you know we have thousands of items in stock. When we were smaller, I could mentally keep track to have a conversation about what sold but how could any reasonable person believe any human could know at any given moment what each dealer sold?

Have you heard of the 80/20 rule? 20% do 80% of the work. This rings true. All 150 dealers do not sell each month. We have some strong dealers with variety of items that consistently sell.

Hats off to one of my top sellers You have become a trusted friend, confidant and advisor. You trusted me to help you sell your items, express gratitude and even volunteer to work in the shop. You understand the gravity of this shop, find joy in the social media posts and applaud the growth. You recognized posts decrease and realize that there is a crack in The Matrix. Thank you. ❤️
