Piko Press presents Mary Milelzcik, who will be teaching the Photo Encaustic Workshop
Encaustic is a mixture of beeswax, damar resin and pigment, which is applied to a solid absorbent surface. Each time a new layer is applied, it must be fused. The layers can be enhanced by carving with tools or drawing with pigment, oil sticks etc. Photographs can be transferred and other materials imbedded to create a variety of amazing results
This is a hands-on workshop, where students learn safe studio practices, encaustic painting basics and how to use those techniques to create a painting using an encaustic photo transfer and/or other photo images. After instruction and experimenting, you will have the opportunity to create a small finished encaustic painting or two with the option of adding photographic techniques
Mary will provide an assortment marking tools and brushes, and also interesting papers, photographs, minerals, fibers, and other natural and found materials for students to incorporate into their paintings. Students are encouraged to bring black and white or color laser prints to transfer or inkjet to use for collage. (for additional details regarding the images, please contact the instructor in advance).
Mary Milelzcik, a life long artist, experiments with mixed media in encaustic painting, papermaking, and printmaking, integrating local minerals and plants. She teaches workshops at her Pahoa studio Arts Asylum, by appointment; and has also taught at the Volcano Art Center, Donkey Mill and East Hawaii Culture Center. For further information, call her at 310.990.2549 or email [email protected].
