Ever wonder what our physical therapists' workout routines look like? Well, here is some footage of our Milton PT, Delaney, rocking one of her own personalized lower body programs! ποΈββοΈπ₯
Delaney loves incorporating a variety of into her regular routine, including: lifting, track workouts, HIIT, yoga, running and ultimate frisbee. This particular program has been her go-to on lower body days recently, and can be done in a gym or at home, with modifications provided based on whatever equipment you have! π€©
π₯ Dynamic warm up: Inchworms, worldβs greatest stretch, groin rock backs, kang squats, regular squats, lateral lunges, and hip openers. Delaney goes through everything for ~8-10 reps, and does 2 sets! You can make it your own by adding any other exercises you like to help get your body warmed up.
π₯ Part 1: Barbell or kettlebell sumo squat 3x8 with 2 minutes rest between sets. For this one, it is helpful to do a couple of warm up sets with lighter weight before getting to your βworking weightβ. You want repetitions 6,7,8 to feel challenging every round!
π₯ Part 2: 20 minute
AMRAP = As Many Rounds As Possible (within the given time). You are going to go through this circuit as many times as possible in 20 minutes. Please - take breaks as needed! π
Modifications are provided in parentheses based on equipment availability and exercise preference. π
1οΈβ£ High Step Ups x 10/side
2οΈβ£ Box Jumps x 10 (squat jumps)
3οΈβ£ Cossack Squats x 10/side
4οΈβ£ Landmine Squat to press x 10 (dumbbell squat to press)
And remember, listen to your body, but this should be a fun and exercise program! Try it out and let us know how it goes! πͺπΌ
Feel free to share videos of you rocking this routine and tag us so we can repost! ποΈ π

You know that regular exercise is crucial to living a healthy lifestyle. The CDC recommends adults aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity a weekβabout 22 minutes a day, so you donβt have to toil away in the gym for hours. But hitting those numbers can still be a challenge, especially if you struggle with persistent pain or limited mobility.

βNeedle Warningβ
A frequently asked question from our patients is: What is the difference between dry needling and acupuncture?π€
Well, we are here to answer!π
While both involve the insertion of needles, the function of the needles are much different.
βΆοΈ Dry Needling: Needles are inserted into muscle "trigger points" and carefully moved in and out to illicit a twitch response. This stimulates the muscle and increases the blood flow to the area, resulting in decreased muscle tightness and reduced pain.
βΆοΈ Acupuncture: Needles are inserted into specific acupoints and left for a short period of time. These points stimulate the nervous system, releasing chemicals into the brain, muscles, and spinal cords. These chemical changes may stimulate the body's natural healing abilities.
Long story short: Dry needling targets your pain directly.π―

Whether you're a seasoned competitor or a weekend warrior, knee pain can significantly impact your performance and overall well-being. πββοΈππ€ΈββοΈ
A few common causes of knee pain, especially in athletes are:
Sports Injuries (e.g., ACL Tears):
π‘ High-impact sports come with an inherent risk of acute injuries, and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are a common occurrence. Sudden stops, changes in direction, or direct blows to the knee can result in ligament injuries.
Improper Biomechanics:
π‘ Poor running form, improper landing techniques, or inadequate equipment can lead to biomechanical issues. Incorrect body mechanics during athletic movements can place excessive stress on the knee joint.
In this guide, we'll delve into common symptoms, causes of knee pain in athletes, and how physical therapy can be a game-changer in your journey to recovery and get you back to doing what you love: https://bit.ly/3x0jOgh

Do you ever notice yourself massaging a sore spot in your neck or find it difficult to turn your head sometimes? π
Neck pain is a common concern that can range from a mild nuisance to a big problem. While neck pain can have several different causes, a contributing factor that often gets overlooked is weakness in the shoulders or upper back.
For more information, read our April newsletter today! https://elliottphysicaltherapy.com/newsletter/april-2024/
But if you want a sneak peek π, here are three exercises that can help strengthen your shoulders and upper back:
βΆοΈ Shoulder Press: Standing up, with a dumbbell in each hand, make a βfield goalβ shape with your arms, then push your arms straight up.
βΆοΈ Reverse Flies: Lean forward at your waist (straight back) with your elbows slightly bent and dumbbell in each hand. Slowly raise the weights until they are in line with your shoulders.
βΆοΈ Modified Push-Ups: Push-ups are a great way to build upper back and shoulder strength, but if you find the standard push-up too difficult, never fear: the modified version is just as effective.
As April comes to an end, it's time to reflect on what we're keeping with us from this month and what is no longer serving us.
Now that the sun is shining definitely don't forget the sunscreen! βοΈ
And even though summer is an exciting time, try not to overbook yourself so you also have some time for self-care and relaxation! π§ββοΈ ποΈ
And in less than a week... It's gonna be MAY!
Are you among the many individuals grappling with the challenges of shoulder impingement?
This prevalent condition can affect approximately 16-26% of the adult population at any given time, causing pain, limited mobility, and disruptions in daily activities.
If you're experiencing any combination of the following, you may be suffering from shoulder impingement:
β οΈ pain while lifting your arm
β οΈ weakness in your shoulder
β οΈ limited range of motion

In honor of the Boston Marathon today, we thought we'd share this motivational quote that is true for most challenging things in life, including physical therapy. ππ» πͺπ»
Just like running a marathon, every patient we work with is taking steps forward to achieve some personal goal. It can be painful, it can be frustrating, but every step forward is one step closer to reaching that goal. Stick with it, stay focused and let us help you succeed! ππ»ββοΈ
Congratulations to all of those running the marathon today, you have worked so hard and you should be incredibly proud of your achievement!
It's understandable to wonder if you will be treated for all of your symptoms when you come in for PT, or if they will have to focus on one thing at a time.
If you are experiencing symptoms that occur in multiple areas like neck and back pain or hip and knee pain - do not worry!
At Elliott Physical Therapy, we don't treat the symptoms π
π»ββοΈ , we treat the person ππ»ββοΈ. We provide a holistic approach that gets to the root cause of your pain, injuries or mobility issues.
Your plan of care will encompass and that will treat that root cause and improve symptoms in multiple areas.
There are specific occasions, such as when a patient comes in for post-surgical treatment, where exercises may be targeted on improving one area before another can be addressed. But please always share any and all symptoms with your physical therapist because more often than not (as our PTs have stated below) these symptoms are connected. π
Thank you to Caity & Alley for answering this question for our patients! ππ»
