Russell Steffensen Hinsdale FM graduate class of 2020! Russ came to us from the west coast where he returned after residency to practice outpatient medicine. He has been enjoying getting to know his new patients and starting to build relationships with them and their families. He is thankful for the amazing people he worked with at Hinsdale and the training her received. When he’s not working he enjoys spending time with his three children and wife Stefanie in the great outdoors and working construction/renovation projects in his home. We miss you and wish you all the best in your first year as an attending!!

During this week’s zoom conferences we heard from some of our ophthalmology and cardiology specialists! We have daily noon lectures which encompass a variety of family medicine topics as well as Wednesday afternoons dedicated to lectures, procedure labs, sim lab, and specialty clinics! Happy At Hinsdale FM residency every month that has a “fifth Wednesday” is a wellness Wednesday, where the residents participate in an activity of their choosing organized by our wellness committee and sponsored by the residency program! Today we participated in a high ropes course at in a socially distanced setting! We had so much fun getting to know our interns better, getting some exercise, zip-lining, and team building!

Congratulations Dr. Vest-Hart .hart.750, one of our core faculty members, for being awarded Illinois Family Physician of the year for 2020 by the Illinois Academy of Family Physicians! A well deserved honor! Dr. Vest-Hart completed her medical school training at CCOM and FM residency at West Suburban Medical Center. She then completed a maternal child health fellowship at PCC Family Health Center. She has been core faculty at Hinsdale Family Medicine since 2014.

Meet our program director, Dr. Sleuwen! Dr. Sleuwen has been in the role of program director since 2019 but has been with the residency program since 1999. She completed her medical school training at University of Missouri, Columbia and then went on to complete her residency at Deaconess Family Medicine in St. Louis, MO. Dr. Sleuwen is passionate about teaching and mentoring residents during their time at Hinsdale. She practices full scope FM and her clinical interests include patient education, pediatric obesity, women’s health, and procedures. When she is not working she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling ✈️ (pre-COVID), watching Netflix, water sports 🏄🏻‍♀️, reading 📖 and cooking 🥘

Meet Samia class if 2023! Samia is from Reno, Nevada and earned her undergraduate biology degree from the University of Nevada, Reno. She describes her medical school experience as an “amazing adventure” at Ross University School of Medicine. When not studying she was repelling down water falls 🧗🏽‍♀️and enjoying the sunsets 🌅of Dominica! She was drawn to Hinsdale FM residency because she felt the program was truly a part of the community. She is excited about being an active member of the community where her patients live! Welcome to the team Samia!

Time for another alumni update! Karen class of 2019 is enjoying life as an attending working in Elmhurst, IL doing outpatient family medicine with newborn privileges at Edward-Elmhurst Health-system. She provides whole family care including contraception care and other in office procedures. Outside of work she is loving being mom to these 3 cuties! We miss you but are so happy for you and your family!

Meet the interns!! Meet Sabiha, class of 2023! Sabiha is a chicago area native who earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from Benedictine University. She then went in to complete her masters in biomedical science and medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. She is passionate about caring for patients with multiple chronic medical diseases through all stages and ages of life! She is excited to serve Hinsdale’s diverse community of patients. Outside of medicine she enjoys exploring downtown Chicago 🌆, biking 🚵🏽‍♀️ , trying new restaurants, water sports 🏄🏻‍♀️, cooking, ceramics, and painting 🎨 , truly a jack of all trades! Welcome !

Hinsdale FM faculty! One of our favorite things about our program is the people. Each of our faculty members brings a unique perspective to medicine and teaching. All of our faculty members practice full scope family medicine including OB. Residents feel supported by our faculty and we are so thankful for the opportunity to work with them each day. Meet the interns! Introducing Phil Serafin class of 2023! Phil studied molecular biology at Loyola university prior to completing medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine . He was drawn to family medicine because of the emphasis on strong patient-doctor relationships that are built over time. His professional interests include preventative medicine, behavioral health, and underserved medicine. Outside of medicine he enjoys spending time with his now wife (congratulations!), and family, gardening, cooking, and traveling. He is excited to continue his training at Hinsdale because of its supportive and friendly atmosphere. Welcome to to the team Phil!

After college she did research in orthopedics for one year before attending medical school at Chicago College of Osteopathic Medicine. It’s time for our “meet the interns” series! Meet Anh class of 2023! Anh is a first generation Asian American who received his undergrad degree from UC Irvine and then moved to the Midwest to attend medical school at Des Moines University. After finding he was interested in fields such as ER, peds, and adult medicine he knew family medicine would be the perfect fit. He hopes to provide care to a diverse patient population throughout all stages of life! In his free time he enjoys basketball, snowboarding, travel, and trying new foods. Welcome to the team Anh!
