While sciatica can occur in people as young as 20, the most susceptible range of people are men in between the ages of 30-50. There’s no one reason for why sciatica occurs, but some of the things that put you at risk for sciatica are prolonged sitting, a history of heavy lifting, driving for extended periods of time, carrying heavy loads, obesity, diabetes, herniated discs, and bone spurs.
If you’ve been feeling pain in your lower back, buttocks, or down your leg, it could be sciatica! Make an appointment with us at Full Potential and get evaluated by a professional. Pain is never normal!
Many people use medications like anti-inflammatories to minimize their discomfort. However, these medications do have potential side effects, so it can be helpful to find other ways to relieve your pain. Physical therapy may be the solution you are looking for.

Sciatica pain is caused by an irritation, inflammation, pinching or compression of a nerve in the lower back. The most common cause is a herniated or slipped disk that causes pressure on the nerve root, but other causes could include arthritis in the spine, injuries to the spine or back, osteoarthritis, or lifestyle.
With a physical therapist, you can get relief from current sciatica, or learn how to prevent it from occurring in the future. Call our office or go online to schedule an appointment today!

We’ve got a great review to share that highlights one of our excellent doctors!
I haven’t been this excited about the results from PT in a long time. Dr Luke VanderZouwen is an outstanding provider and he is a PT professional who, when he works with you, is working towards is reducing your immediate pain and he has a long term goal of increasing your level of fitness and good health. Luke is one of the nicest persons I have ever had the good fortune to know. Luke has treated me three times, rehab on a rotator cuff repair, one other injury and most recently an injury to my hip and low back. Luke is helping me regain strength and good health to several areas. He’s fantastic. Luke is helping me regain a level of fitness. I cannot praise Luke enough for the track he’s put me on towards fitness and good health. -William V.
Sometimes the only thing you need to get results is an educated professional to partner with you on your journey. Call our office to see how one of our staff members can help you reach your goals!

While the profession of physical therapy originated around WWI, the practice of physical therapy is seen as early as 460 BC.
Physicians like Galen and Hippocrates (yes, THAT Hippocrates 🤣) advocated massage, manual therapy techniques, and hydrotherapy to treat patients. Hippocrates even studied anatomy thoroughly in order to master these practices!
Whether you’re rehabilitating after an injury, training for an athletic event, or even just making lifestyle changes, it can be easy to get overwhelmed.
Today’s is a reminder for you! The learning curve can seem steep, but with practice and dedication, you’ll make progress in no time 💪
Last month in our newsletter, we covered how the referral process to physical therapy has become more complicated with the consolidation of physician practices into the major hospital systems in our area.
As an independent practice, one of our primary counters to these changes is to help the public know who we are and how we have helped people overcome a pain problem.
-
This is where you come in; you are our best resource for educating the public on how we can help them. They, in turn, can communicate to their doctor on where they want to go for PT. Competition is a great equalizer in business and supporting small businesses with reviews helps us compete. And, we only exist because of results so we work hard to make our patients better. Everyone wins!

“I'm not exaggerating when I say that BJ and Emily had just about as much of an impact on my quality of life and symptom amelioration as the surgeon who replaced my hip. I believe I couldn't have done one without the other. Physical therapy is an investment in the rest of my life and longevity of my surgery/implant that I am happy to make. I sing Full Potential's praises to anyone who will listen. If you live anywhere near Holland, this is the place to go. Thank you!! 💙💙”

Did you know women were the first physical therapists in the US?
-
While physical therapy techniques and sciences have been documented as early as 300 B.C., the first “official” physical therapists in the US were women!
-
The need for physical therapy rose during WWI. Soldiers would be injured and need to return to battle, creating a demand for effective rehabilitation. Female civilian employees trained to rehabilitate the troops through physical education, “military” massage, and muscle re-education, and became the first physical therapists in the US!
-
Eventually forming a unit over 2,000 members strong, they worked with the medical corps in the US and overseas. We’re thankful to these women for implementing the practice of PT in the US, and for how many lives PT has changed since then!

The therapist just touched all the sore spots just by feel and measured my range of motion and give me exercises to work on. in just a couple of weeks I was "cured". Full range of motion everywhere and best of all no headaches!"

A secondary headache is caused by another condition that triggers pain-sensitive areas in the neck and head. They are less common than primary headaches, but are often more serious.

If you've ever doubted that physical therapy can be effective, this review is for you! ⬇️
"Several years ago, I met with a hand surgeon to inquire about basal thumb joint surgery to relieve some increasing pain in my hand due to overuse at work. When he showed me the X-ray, he said he was dumbfounded that I was functioning at all - with the levels of calcification and arthritis I had in that joint, there should have been no flexibility, and constant excruciating pain. That's when I realized what an incredible, positive difference Full Potential's physical therapy had been making - giving me years of non-invasive relief! Thank you, Vince and ALL your great staff! -Marilu A."

Our Story
Is physical therapy right for you? Call our office to find out! We can schedule a free consultation where you will meet one-on-one with a physical therapist. Or, we can arrange for a physical therapist to speak with you over the phone.
Full Potential Physical Therapy is dedicated to assisting each of our patients back to health. For our patients to reach their potential, we believe that the therapist must be able to gain an understanding of each patient's condition; not only in the context of how their body functions as a whole, but also in relation to how they breathe, align with gravity, and stabilize. All these factors play a role in the healing process. Gaining an appreciation of the whole system provides useful insights into understanding WHY the individual pieces are breaking down or are vulnerable to injury (osteoarthritis, overuse injuries, strains, chronic problems, etc.).
When we address the body as a whole, we are better able to understand the underlying causes that perpetuate an individual's pain. This enables us to address the problem by creating an individualized program that gets results. Our patients leave us feeling more in control of their pain, their body, their life! Our patients are taught how to maintain their gains so they are able to enjoy life to their full potential.
