Providing high-quality healthcare services to South Florida residents

Jorge is a remarkable patient whose journey of recovery has inspired us all. As South Florida's only male doula, Jorge faced a life-altering challenge after experiencing alarming symptoms while assisting a patient in labor in February. Confused and unsteady, he was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital, where doctors diagnosed him with a left subdural hematoma, a collection of blood near the brain.

After two brain surgeries by Dr Simon Buttrick, Memorial Neuroscience Institute Neurosurgeon and battling pneumonia, Jorge entered our inpatient rehab unit at Memorial Regional Hospital South in March. Initially, he needed total assistance for every movement and wore a helmet to protect his head post-craniotomy. Physical therapist Ximena recalls, “Jorge was incredibly determined, even when he faced overwhelming challenges. His sweet demeanor and the support of his devoted wife, Soledad, created a truly uplifting environment.”

Despite the severity of his condition, Jorge approached therapy sessions with a smile and an unwavering spirit. “I felt extraordinary support from the entire team at Memorial,” Jorge said. “They were kind, patient, and genuinely invested in my recovery.”

Following weeks of hard work, Jorge left inpatient rehab and began outpatient physical therapy. As he transitioned from a wheelchair to using a walker, Jorge's main goal was clear: to return to his role as a doula, performing home births that required him to get on the ground and sit on a low stool.

“Jorge’s recovery is nothing short of miraculous, and it is due in part to Jorge being the hardest working patient,” said Hannah, his neuro outpatient physical therapist at Memorial Regional Hospital South. “We created a progressive strengthening program that culminated in Jorge bringing a birthing pool and his work stool into the clinic to practice. With guidance, practice, and encouragement from his family, Jorge successfully performed all the mobility components necessary to return to work!”

Now back in action, Jorge’s story embodies the heart of Memorial Healthcare System, where every patient is treated with compassion and dedication. We celebrate Jorge’s incredible journey, a reminder that with the right care and support, recovery is not just possible, but a pathway to new beginnings. Thank you, Jorge, for inspiring us all!

Dr. Maike Blaya, a neurologist at Memorial Neuroscience Institute who specializes in headaches, experienced a life-changing moment when a severe headache turned out to be a hemorrhagic stroke. Thanks to the expert care of Dr. Norman Ajiboye, Medical Director of Stroke Programs, and his team, Dr. Blaya underwent a minimally invasive brain procedure and made a remarkable recovery.

“I’ve never performed this surgery on a colleague before,” shared Dr. Ajiboye. “She’s got a good prognosis, she’s sharp mentally and able to serve her community.”

Reflecting on her journey, Dr. Blaya says, “I am a different person today. I allow myself to laugh and continue to be the neurologist I’ve always wanted to be.”

Her story is a powerful reminder to "BE FAST" when recognizing stroke symptoms.

"This is a miracle for me,” says Pierre, the first patient to receive both a heart and kidney transplant, simultaneously, at Memorial Transplant Institute.

After battling heart and kidney failure for years, he had almost given up hope. “I talked to my family to prepare for my funeral,” he recalled. But thanks to the Memorial Transplant Institute team and the expertise of Dr. Miguel Castro, an advanced heart failure cardiologist at Memorial Healthcare System, and Dr. Seyed Ghasemian, Chief of the Abdominal Transplant Surgery Program, Pierre’s story took a remarkable turn.

“He was transferred to us very sick,” said Dr. Castro. “With both a heart and kidney transplant, there’s a huge coordination that takes place. Fortunately, he did really well.” Now, Pierre is back in his garden, full of life, energy, and gratitude. “I can’t thank the doctors and nurses enough. They gave me my life back.”

A heartfelt shoutout to the incredible Memorial Transplant Institute team for making this miracle possible. We lead for you.

We are now diagnosing breast cancer earlier than ever before, thanks to advancements in mammogram technology, and our treatment options have become more targeted and effective.

Mammograms, combined with a personalized approach to risk assessment and screening, give women their best chance at detecting breast cancer early and improving their odds of beating the disease. With the right tools and a continued focus on early detection, we can continue to improve survival rates and help even more women beat the disease.

Dr. Natasha Rueth, Chief of Breast Services at Memorial Cancer Institute, emphasizes the importance of regular mammograms, especially 3D mammograms, which are now widely recommended as the optimal screening method.

Radiation therapy has long been a key component of breast cancer treatment, and recent advancements have made it more effective, convenient, and less toxic for patients.

Dr. Christine Feng, Radiation Oncologist at Memorial Cancer Institute, highlights new techniques like deep inspiration breath hold (DIBH) and partial breast radiation, which are making treatments safer and more targeted.

Thinking about all the men out there who put off seeing the doctor... you're not alone! According to the CDC, men are less likely than women to seek routine medical care. In 2022, the National Health Interview Survey found that 17.5% of men had not seen a doctor in the past year, compared to 10.5% of women.

But as Dr. Jonathan Silberstein, Chief of the Uro-Oncology Program at Memorial Healthcare System, explains, a quick and simple PSA blood test could make a huge impact in the trajectory of your life. It's a straightforward screening that can catch prostate cancer early when it’s most treatable. So, make your health a priority this month - schedule your blood test and encourage your loved ones to do the same!
