Understanding Ectopic Pregnancy 04/06/2022

Back in 1997, as a member of my medical society, I visited several state legislators’ offices to explain how the gatekeeper model of HMO’s jeopardized women’s health by delaying access to care for things like medical management of ectopic pregnancy, which back then was relatively new. I will never forget the looks one legislator in particular got from his mostly female staff when he asked me “yeah, but does this happen a lot?” He ended up supporting our bill to provide direct access for pregnant women to their gyn without first having to seek “authorization” from their P*P. Back then it was ideology hiding behind “business” and the insurance industry.
Now 25 years later, women are again facing obstacles in access to care by a mostly male and ideologically dominated political body that is either clueless or openly and painfully misguided by radical religious beliefs regarding the impact their decisions have on women’s lives. It’s astonishing and sad in the 21st century that such backward thinking still exists. The world has regressed so much in the last six years at the hands of radical ideologues and demagoguery. It must stop. Politicians - stay out of my exam room! Go study some biology. And while you’re at it, talk to some women. Actually don’t talk. Just listen. You just might learn a thing or two.
