The 1984 Olympics marked a historic moment for men's volleyball! The U.S. team clinched their first-ever gold medal, dominating Brazil in the final (3-0). Led by hall of famers Karch Kiraly (2001), Steve Timmons (1998), Dusty Dvorak (1998), Craig Buck (1998) and coach Doug Beal (1989), they showcased incredible skill and teamwork. Brazil was led by Bernardinho (2022), Renan Dal Zotto (2015), Bernard Rajzman (2005) and coach Bebeto de Freitas (2015). Italy secured the bronze behind coach Silvano Prandi (2023) by defeating Canada. This tournament boosted volleyball's popularity in the U.S. and set the stage for future successes.
The 1984 Olympic Men's Volleyball Tournament remains a milestone in the history of volleyball, celebrated for its high level of competition and the emergence of new volleyball powerhouses.
In the Women's tournament, China and the United States emerged as the top teams in the preliminary rounds, both showcasing strong performances and finishing at the top of the standings. Behind the stellar play of Lang Ping (2002) and coaching of Yuan Weimin (2007), China showcased their superior skills and strategy, overpowering the U.S. team with their strong serves, quick attacks, and solid defense. This victory marked China's first Olympic gold medal in women's volleyball. The U.S. women were led by Flo Hyman (1988), Rita Crockett (2011), Debbie Green (1995), Paula Weishoff (1998) and coach Arie Selinger (1995). Kumi Nakada and Shigeo Yamada helped Japan defeat Cecilia Tait (2005) and coach Man-Bok Park (2016) of Peru to win the bronze medal, highlighting their resilience and tactical play.

The U.S. team's silver medal performance also contributed to the growing popularity of volleyball in the United States.
The IVHF will highlight from each Olympic/Paralympic Games leading up to Paris 2024.
The 1984 Paralympic Games were held in both Europe and North America.
In New York, eight countries registered in Men's Sitting Volleyball. The final standings were:
1. NED π₯
2. GER π₯
3. SWE π₯
The Netherlands defeated Germany 3-0 in the final with set scores 15-6, 15-5, 15-4.
Initially, the four disability groups at the time were supposed to compete together in the USA, as the IOC had announced in 1977 that the 1984 Olympic Games would be held in Los Angeles. But the independent sports organizations for athletes with disabilities had no formal relations with the Olympic Organizing Committee.
Therefore, in 1980, the American National Wheelchair Athletic Association, an affiliated organization to the International Stoke Mandeville Games Federation, announced it would hold its own Games for wheelchair athletes in Stoke Mandeville from 22 July-1 August. At the Paralympic Movementβs birthplace 1,100 Para athletes from 41 countries competed for medals.
As a result, the other three impairment groups combined their efforts and chose New York as their Games venue.
