Are we headed there again?
We came back from a succesful Outsider Art Fair feeling great about Pulp and our future. We felt grateful for the financial and emotional support that the gallery received. My old partner and I used to debate whether a retail shop should have transparency in sales performance. The never let them see you sweat perspective vs. the ship is sinking honesty. You can probably guess what side I fell on.
So here we are... since the Fair in February, our sales are down 50%. Retail often has downturns, or unexplainable periods of sales or drought. In the 5 and 1/2 years we have had Pulp I have been unable to discern any
trend. seasonal or otherwise.
So.. that’s the financial report. My sense is that the political environment is making people nervous.
Are people pulling back from spending?
It always feels like a miracle that we sell art. at all. I am incredibly grateful for all the social media, gallery visits, and support Pulp gets. But it doesn’t buy the groceries. Grateful for this space… this job. and gift of the artists and their art.
Sunday 11-4. Come visit!
During the late 19th century Holyoke produced 80% of the writing paper used in the U.S. and had the largest paper, Alpaca and wool mills in the world. Many of the mills are still standing. Like many 19th century mill towns, Holyoke is a mix of decay and development. As development moves down the river from Northampton to Easthampton (which now feels like a satellite of Brooklyn with an inordinate number of blundstone wearing hipsters), and south to Holyoke, I wonder what’s next. Not hating on Blunstones.. I am part of the 1st wave of New York transplants that invaded the area in 2005 with a massive boat load of attitude and opinion. I love Holyoke in the same way I loved Brooklyn. It is home to a diverse group of people with a rich history. Come explore.

fed a drawing of mine (swipe), and a short description of Holyoke and Pulp into the AI machinery and this is what it spit out. - see images.. here is what the AI had to say about it - “A historical document with geometric shapes in the center, styled to reflect the theme of an old mill town known for its paper mills and called ‘Paper City.’ The geometric shapes retain vintage tones of sepia, soft blues, and muted greens, incorporating intricate details and elements of paper and mill machinery. The background has an aged parchment texture with detailed illustrations of mill buildings and industrial elements, adding a gritty feel. An ornate, antique-style border frames the document with complex and modular designs. The text in the image should only include ‘PULP’, ‘PAPER CITY,’ and a minimal occurrence of ‘HOLYOKE,’ with ‘PAPER CITY’ and ‘HOLYOKE’ capitalized and ‘PULP’ always in uppercase. Focus more on ‘PULP’ and ‘PAPER CITY.’”

We are excited to have works on paper by artist in our Front Room. Lynn continues to play an important roll in our area as an exhibiting artist , educator, collector, and all around incredible human being person. Please come on out if you can and meet Lynn and talk Drypoint. Below is partial artist statement. Also all Lynn’s work can now be seen on the website.
“Lately, I’ve been drawing with a brush, with gouache paints, mustering the confidence and commitment that comes with that medium. I’m drawing what’s on my tables inside, or what I notice outside. I’m interested in everyday beauty and making compositions out of random arrangements of ordinary objects or natural forms. I’ve worked so much in color in my work, that I found using just black and sometimes white a simplified pleasure. When I do use color, I tried to use it primarily as colored, drawn gestural marks.
Gouache paint, also known as opaque watercolor, soaks into paper quickly, making it hard to change or remove. It can be used with enough water to keep it transparent, but the quality I love about it is its definitiveness and solidity. For decades, I’ve made drawings, prints, paintings, animations and murals. Whatever the medium, it’s always about the marks and how they immediately create forms and space. Here, in these drawings, the marks also add up to, magically, tell small stories. The stories are about of the relationship of the mark and the forms and the relationships between forms, The marks make the forms but also, I hope, convey the energy and joy of seeing, anywhere I look.”
