Today is "Dia da Consciência Negra (Black Awareness Day)" in Brazil, also known as Zumbi Day.

Who was Zumbi dos Palmares?

He was the last leader of the famous Quilombo dos Palmares, located in Serra da Barriga, in Alagoas. Born free, he was captured and given to a Portuguese missionary at the age of six. He escaped in 1670, returning to his place of origin. In 1678, for not accepting negotiations with the Government of Pernambuco, Zumbi challenged the leadership of Ganga Zumba and became the new leader of Quilombo dos Palmares, maintaining the resistance against Portuguese oppression. He was arrested and killed at the age of 40, on November 20, 1695. The date was established by law as the National Day of Black Consciousness.

Effective immediately, we are limiting our class size to 9 students max in accordance to Honolulu City & County emergency proclamation.

Our class is held at Kanewai Park from 7pm - 8:30pm on Monday & Wednesday.

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the cancellation of our event in May. To survive this coronavirus pandemic together, we need to be a part of the solution and distant ourselves socially. No one knows if things will go back to normal in May, and we all live in a new reality now. We can always play Capoeira and celebrate life later, but now is not the time to risk everyone's safety and health. As more new cases and deaths emerge from around the world, we are learning the seriousness of this virus. This is not something you should be taking lightly.

I apologize to those who were looking forward to this event; especially the beginners who were training hard to receive their first belt. But you can't play Capoeira if you are sick. As soon as this pandemic is over, we will schedule our event, hopefully later this year.

Thank you for your understanding in this difficult time. Stay home and be healthy. Capoeira is always there with you if you want it.

Capoeira is the best way to make friends. Join your local capoeira school. Train hard so you can be proficient in capoeira. Then travel around the world for capoeira to make friends. It’s that simple. :)
