Day 7-11: 5-9 DAYS POST-OP FROM ACL SURGERY
Today we continue of our series “Diary of a Physical Therapist: ACL Surgery and Recovery from Jujitsu”.
🏋️♀️ I’m already thinking about life post-ACL reconstructive surgery. As an experienced PT, I know that the studies support jumping into physical therapy immediately after surgery. This helps to ensure a swift and strong recovery: 💪🏾
1. Accelerated Healing: Early initiation of physical therapy aids in jump starting the healing process by reducing inflammation, promoting circulation, and preventing scar tissue buildup, setting the stage for quicker recovery.
2. Prevention of Muscle Atrophy: Without immediate intervention, muscles around the knee can weaken due to disuse. Physical therapy exercises target these muscles early on, preventing atrophy and maintaining strength during the critical recovery period.
3. Improved Range of Motion: Post-surgery, the knee joint tends to stiffen. Physical therapy techniques, including gentle mobilization and stretching exercises, are employed to restore full range of motion, ensuring you regain flexibility and functionality.
4. Enhanced Stability: Strengthening the muscles surrounding the knee is essential for stability. Physical therapy focuses on progressively building strength, improving balance, and refining proprioception, reducing the risk of future injuries and enhancing overall joint stability.
5. Rebuild Strength: Strengthening the muscles around the knee helps to prevent future injuries. PT sessions post-surgery are tailored to gradually rebuild strength, improve balance, and enhance proprioception, allowing you to return to your daily activities and sports with confidence.

DAY 2: ACL SURGERY DAY!!
Today is the second day of our series “Diary of a Physical Therapist: ACL Surgery and Recovery from Jujitsu”.
Learn first-hand real-life experiences from me, Cindy Oania, Head Physical Therapist at Action Rehab Hawaii as I go through my very own ACL surgery and PT journey of rehabbing my knee from a Jujitsu injury.
Today I underwent ACL reconstruction surgery with Bone-Patellar-Tendon-Bone (BTB) allograft. (More on why I chose an allograft vs. autograft later).
Post Op: Elevation, compression, and ice. I was sent home with crutches and allowed to walk with my knee brace unlocked.
Pro Tips:
1️⃣ Stretching: I’ve been stretching every hour to tolerance and not forcing it.
2️⃣ Pain Meds: I’m taking my pain meds to stay ahead of the pain as the achiness has started to increase.
3️⃣ Crutches: My crutches weren’t fitted correctly so I had to make adjustments. I follow the 2, 4, 6 rule - 2 inches from the armpit, 4 inches out to the side of foot, and 6 inches in front of the foot. Hand grips should be high enough to keep elbow bent to about 20-30 degrees. Armpits should not rest on the crutch pads!

How to prepare for ACL surgery from a Jujitsu injury rolling on the mat. Let’s begin with the question of “What can I do to get my body in good condition for surgery?”.
Let me paint the picture for you. I just blew out my knee rolling on the mat. I was able to get in to see my Orthopedic Surgeon within 48 hours and the MRI confirmed a torn ACL and MCL. (I was proactive and made this happen as soon as possible. I always advise being your own health care advocate when it comes to your body.)
Pro Tips:
1️⃣ ACL Surgery: If you are going to have ACL surgery, don’t put it off because your muscles will begin to atrophy. The sooner you can get into surgery, the better.
2️⃣Pre-Surgery Conditioning: Make sure you have full range of motion or get it as good as possible for your level.
3️⃣ Walking: Try walking with a normal gait (full extension / straightening your leg). This will help improve post-operational recovery.

✨ 1. If I currently have knee osteoarthritis and get steroid and/or hyaluronic knee injections, can PT help me?
The answer is Yes!!! PT is appropriate for you. While PT can’t reverse osteoarthritis in the knee, it can help slow it down and protect the joint by improving strength and flexibility. PT Can also teach you how to move in ways that put less stress/compression on the knees.
