University of Hawaii at Mānoa Hamilton Library 2024-2029 Strategic Plan
“I am delighted to introduce Hamilton Library’s new vision, mission, and values as well as our 2024-2029 Strategic Goals and Actions. These represent more than 12 months of work by a dedicated Library Strategic Planning Committee, with the help of consultants brightspot strategy, and input from librarians, staff, students, and faculty. This collective process focused our attention and enabled us to develop a shared vision for the future.
The role of our library continues to evolve. Revisiting our vision, mission, and values allowed us to embrace new functions while reaffirming our traditional responsibilities. Our commitment to becoming a Native Hawaiian Place of Learning inspired us to express these guiding statements using ‘Olelo Hawaii terminology; grounding us intentionally and explicitly in the ‘äina which sustains Hawaii.
We now turn to the critical work of making our 2024-2029 Strategic Goals and Actions a reality. We will need the assistance of individuals, departments and the campus community in designing actionable strategies. As a living plan we will assess, adapt, and redesign as necessary.
Vision, mission, values, goals and actions come to life through the talent, expertise, and commitment of our librarians and staff. I am excited to continue working with the Hamilton Library ‘ohana to make an impact on our students, faculty, and community.”
- Dr. Clem Guthro, University Librarian

In honor of King Kamehameha Day, we wanted to share a book titled, Ke Kumu Aupuni: The Foundation of Hawaiian Nationhood written by Samuel Manaiakalani Kamakau and translated by M. Puakea Nogelmeier. This book tells the story of King Kamehameha I from his early beginnings and during his time uniting the Hawaiian Island.
Feel free learn more about King Kamehameha’s life and story at Hamilton Library Hawaiian Collection Reading room.
Happy King Kamehameha Day!
This well-known portrait of King Kamehameha (“Tammeamea”) was done by Louis Choris, artist on the 1815-1818 expedition led by Otto von Kotzebue. Published in Choris’ Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde (completed in 1822), it was considered by David Forbes to be one of the four “most important” illustrations of this work, included as part of a “very beautiful pictorial examination of the Hawaiian Islands and of Hawaiian culture as it existed prior to the death of Kamehameha I in 1819 and prior to the abolition of the kapu.”
On this day, we pay tribute to and show respect for the individuals who have bravely defended our nation. Thank you for your selfless acts.
In observance of Memorial Day, the library will be closed on Monday, May 24, 2024.

Explore the "Alfred Preis in Hawaiʻi: Vienna Émigré, Architect, and Advocate" exhibit at the Bridge Gallery in Hamilton Library.
Meet Alfred Preis, a visionary architect and advocate for the arts in Hawaii. Born in Vienna, Austria, Preis fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1939 and found refuge in Honolulu. His legacy includes iconic landmarks like the USS Arizona Memorial and the entrance to the Honolulu Zoo. His legacy extends beyond architecture; he spearheaded the establishment of the Hawaiʻi State Foundation on Culture and the Arts, making Hawaii the first state in the nation with a statewide arts organization. Preis's passion for integrating art into public spaces led to groundbreaking legislation requiring companies to contribute one percent of construction costs for public art. His impact resonates in Hawaii's cultural landscape to this day.
Designed and co-curated by Axel Schimitzberger (CalPoly Pomona) and Laura Maguire (UHM Architecture) with the generous support of the Austrian Consulate General – Los Angeles, this traveling exhibit on Alfred Preis’ legacy in Hawaiʻi will be on view in UHM Hamilton Library until May 15, 2024.

Visit the library’s first floor elevator gallery to view ‘Ōnaehana - Peace Systems, an exhibit by Native Hawaiian artist, illustrator, and visionary, Solomon Enos. The conceptual sketches and paintings featured in this exhibit respond to the continued effects of climate change and historical nuclear testing on Bikini Atoll and nearby Marshallese atolls. Enos shares the message that guided his process as he created these pieces in situ: “[I]f we can harness great power to facilitate destruction, so too can we move in the polar opposite direction, and turn our hands, minds and hearts to profound systems of peace.”
