DID YOU KNOW that the Hawaiian archipelago measures 1,523 miles making it the longest island chain in the world? Known as the North Western Hawaiian Islands (NWHI), these islands and atolls are home to endemic Passerines and Waterbirds such as the Laysan Finch, Nohoa Millerbird, Nihoa Finch, and the Laysan Duck. The NWHI make up Papahānaumokuākea which is the largest fully protected conservation area under the US flag and is one of the largest marine conservation areas in the world.

DID YOU KNOW that the ʻŌpeʻpeʻa, Aeorestes semotus, is the only remaining native land mammal in Hawaiʻi? Also known as the Hawaiian hoary bat, this mammal likes roosting in trees and during sunset leave their tree to go forage on insects. They are an endangered species and their threats include destruction of habitat, collision with wind turbines, and barbed wire fences.

During today’s session of the students of ʻĀina & Health learned about coral bleaching and coral ecosystems. Beforehand, they were asked to draw what they think a healthy coral ecosystem looks like🐠 We think they did a pretty good job! Then, Engineering & Comp Sci started building their robot. Stay tuned for their completed robot at the end of the week🤖

It can also be used as a natural dye to color clothing. Who’s ready to get creative?! But watch out, your fingers will be yellow for quite some time. Swipe to see!

DID YOU KNOW that Mōlī (Laysan Albatross) are a type of Indigenous seabird? Mōlī are pelagic birds meaning they spend most of their life on open ocean. They can remain in flight for weeks and sleep in-flight! Their breeding grounds are throughout the North West Hawaiian Islands and on the Main Hawaiian Islands of Kauaʻi and Oʻahu and Lehua Island. Eggs are laid between November and December and chicks fledge in July. When they’re not home breeding, they’re widely dispersed throughout the North Pacific. Mōlī have a life span of about 40 years. They are listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN Red list.
DID YOU KNOW over 850 species of plants are found within the boundaries of Haleakalā? Over 400 species are native and over 350 are endemic. Some plants include ʻĀhinahina (Argyroxiphium sandwicense sap. macroceohalum), Pilo (Coprosma montana), and Kūpaoa (Dubautia menziesii).
