There are different types of trauma. By no means does it justify perpetuating harm onto others. It’s an opportunity to recognize patterns of why we behave the way we do. When it comes to multigenerational trauma (economic deprivation/poverty, food insecurity, violence, oppression, toxic stress, etc) those traumatic experiences can be passed down between generations!
- [ ] Not only does secret family recipes get passed down through families, so does trauma.
- [ ] Generational trauma can happen in the uterus. For example, the maternal stress a woman may experience while pregnant and living in a toxic environment.
- [ ] Generational trauma can cause epigenetic changes to occur to a person’s DNA.
-A study published in 2016 found that Holocaust survivors and their children were more likely to have changes in their FKBPF5 gene, a gene linked to anxiety, depression, and PTSD.
Why is it important to liberate future generations or break the cycle?
Generational trauma can lead to:
*anxiety
*depression
*emotional numbness
*depersonalization
*decreased attachment/connection with others
*impaired life skills
Treatment for Generational Trauma:
*Accepting what occurred and how it affects you
*Psychotherapy, or counseling
When symptoms are pervasive other options such as neurofeedback or medication management can be utilized until a goal of resolution is achieved.
Trauma can show up in so many ways, both physically and emotionally. It affects so many people- from children to adults. Awareness is the first step of healing trauma. Recognition, being understanding, and supporting those in need creates empowerment.
It is important to recognize that it is not realistic or healthy to expect to be okay everyday. Just like physical health, our mental health can fluctuate and be influenced by various factors such as stress, life events, and personal circumstances.

A few daily reminders:
1) You’re doing your best. Acknowledge your efforts. Be patient and kind to yourself.
2) You are strong and resilient. You have an inner strength to overcome adversity.
3) Your feelings are valid.
4) Celebrate your progress!
Did you know that Navy Seals use box breathing! Box breathing is a deep breathing exercise that helps promote relaxation. It works by distracting your mind as you count to four, calming your nervous system. When in high-stress situations, this technique can help counter the stress response. As breathing becomes deeper, your heartbeat slows, muscles relax, and your blood pressure decreases or stabilizes. Give it a try.

Although the mind and body are often viewed as being separate, mental and physical health are actually closely related. Good mental health can positively affect your physical health just as poor mental health can negatively affect your physical health. Take care of both!
Panic attacks are a sudden onset of intense anxiety. There is a surge of intense fear or physical symptoms. Familiarizing yourself with panic attack symptoms can help you feel more in control while one is happening. Understanding how your mind and body work during these episodes can help you develop a healthier response to frightening situations. Try techniques shown but also a mental health provider can help differentiate between occasional panic attacks and a worse serious panic disorder, which may require treatment and possibly medication, in addition to helping figure out if your episodes are triggered in part by other conditions.
Reduced light and shorter fall and winter days may increase Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression triggered by the changing seasons and waning daylight. It’s a real thing! Here are some ways to help prevent or treat SAD.
Men are conditioned from an early age to not show it when they are struggling. Let’s change that and offer judgment free spaces where they can talk about their mental health and let’s celebrate healthy models of masculinity! credit:

It’s normal to feel anxious sometimes. When anxiety is hard to control or out of proportion to your situation, it affects your mind and body. Find support and when that isn’t enough it may be time to look at whether there is a medical cause behind it. There are different medication options that can help manage both the physical and psychological symptoms of anxiety. It’s okay to seek help.
Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Untreated, mental illness can contribute to higher medical expenses and poor performance at school and work. If you’re experiencing symptoms from anxiety, depression, ADHD, or PTSD contact us.
Extreme self-reliance or hyper-independence often springs from a protective mechanism, after experiencing a traumatic event, and there is a need to protect one’s self (at all costs). This can lead to anxiety and/or depression. If therapy alone is not enough, there are medication treatment options for these conditions. Contact for more information.
Anger can be part of depression's diagnostic picture, but not always. Healthy expression of natural anger is not a problem. It becomes unhealthy when it interferes with daily life and relationships.
To reset your mindset for joy ask yourself, “how else can I see this?” Another question to ask, “is my reaction and behavior helping me to lean toward or away from building confidence and a reflection of who I want to be?” Through powerful and concise ‘rewording’ we can train ourselves to continually tap into our joy and strengths.
Everyday can’t always be a good day and that’s okay. Focus on the things you can control and know that your feelings are real, valid, and allowed.

When you rest, you give your mind and emotions a break from stimuli. Remember to give yourself permission to check out and rest. If you find that your mind continues to “race” and you’re always overthinking, even after participating in therapy, maybe it’s time to find out if there is a medical cause. Call us at Innova Mind and Body Psychiatric Care.

Melatonin is a hormone produced in the pineal gland that promotes sleep. When taking melatonin, more isn’t always better🧠
Dopamine- the feel good neurotransmitter plays a role in lots of functions: learning and attention, mood, movement, heart rate, sleep, pain processing, and more. It’s not only for what helps us feel pleasure as part of the brain’s reward system. Once you reach that goal or get the reward, what next? Learn to enjoy the journey instead of chasing happiness.
Being “sensitive” can be a valuable trait by creating greater empathy, creativity, and intuition. Don’t forget to establish boundaries so it does not impact your own mental health and relationships. Innova Mind and Body
It’s in plain sight😂 Focusing and being organized with ADHD can seem daunting. Some ways to get organized can be to assign items a “home,” simplify by getting rid of unnecessary items, color-coding may help with staying on track with tasks, make lists of things/goals to accomplish, or label storage bins or containers while organizing. Remember to start small, but just start somewhere🧠
Continue to spread love! That’s all✌🏼
