Tax season starts on January 23

Their are two types of income earned and unearned. Unearned income can be interest, dividends, capital gains. Also included in this list is taxable social security benefits, pensions annuities, and distributions of unearned income from a trust.

All taxpayers are entitled to a standard deduction. It is a flat amount in which each tax payer and dependent are entitled to. However, this credit can be excluded as a personal exemption if you are claimed as a dependent on someone else return.

A standard deduction is a set dollar amount that IRS allows tax payers to use but can vary according to filing status, age and dependency status. Each year the dollar amount can vary according to inflation.
Itemized deduction are expenses that you pay for throughout the year. To understand which one is best for you, in general, if your itemized deductions are greater than your standard deduction a taxpayer should itemize.

Many taxpayers will be experiencing refund delays this year. Filers who file early are more than likely to be effected by the new tax law. IRS cannot issue refunds before Feb. 15 for filers who claim the Earned Income Tax Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit. The tax process starts as usual but no refunds will be issued before Feb 15.
