Tax season is near so what are some LEGIT ways to reduce taxes on retirement income??

Did you know that income from certain sources may not be subject to federal income tax. If you learn how to structure your retirement income right, you can legally minimize how much you pay in taxes!!

Here are some ideas:

1. Social Security benefits--if your provisional income is below a certain amount, you could avoid federal income taxes!

2. Health Savings Account distributions--contributions are tax-free, they, grow tax free, and qualified withdrawals are tax-free --> the Trifecta of tax advantages!

3. Reverse mortgage payments-- as a lump sum, monthly advance, or line of credit, there are no fed taxes!

4. Roth IRA distributions-- after age 59 1/2, these are tax free-->the SEED has been taxed already, so the HARVEST will not be!

5. Life Insurance Proceeds-- as a death benefit or as distributions from your own PROPERLY STRUCTURED cash value life insurance policy, the money from these are TAX FREE!

6. Municipal Bond interest--investing in these generally allow you make interest gains tax free!

7. Capital gains from the sale of your primary home may not be subject to taxes depending on how much you made. The gains can also be invested in the right tools which can help you DEFER, REDUCE, and ultimately ELIMINATE capital gains taxes!

8. Veterans Benefits--many benefits paid through the VA are not treated as income so therefore, no taxes!

9. Insurance premiums of retired public safety officers--first responders may be able to exclude up to $3,000 in income from retirement plans used to pay premiums for health or long-term care insurance

Of course, consult your tax professional! And if you want to PROACTIVELY plan a tax strategy, get with a financial advisor!

This happens to be one of my favorite books and is one I’ve read several times. Given its subject matter, it transcends all professions and disciplines and even helps me with being a husband and dad (I need all the help I can get 😅).

Some of the key areas it guides you on include:

-using questions to stimulate thinking
-using questions to get people to open up
-using questions to increase quality listening
-and several more…

Asking the right questions can help you gain valuable information, steer conversations, and help others (even when they don’t realize you’re doing it 😆)
